They Don’t Even Know

I started to write a post about how my relationships online had molded me and changed me and made me a better person. I was doing it to try and earn a trip to SOBCon 2010. I wanted the getaway, more importantly I want to meet with people who know how the virtual meets concrete and learn from them. I want to grow. I want to learn from the best. I want to be ready to move to the next step.

As I got ready to write this post the tears flowed as I looked back at all the people who have had an impact on me. When I look back at the last 15 years and the people I have met online and how they have molded me and made me who I am today tears had to flow  in absolute gratitude and amazement. I have truely been blessed. So many have come into my life for a while and then left leaving a huge impression.

My journey online began some 15 years ago when began dating online (Yes, I was one of the first people I knew who married someone she met online). My local paper the Halifax Herald even wrote a story about how the Canadian girl was marrying her American sweetheart. Back 15 years ago my online friendships began on websites and joining email groups.

Then just some few years later my marriage failed and I was back here in Canada. I joined a number of MSN Groups and formed friendships with people all over the world. Some of these friends I still keep in touch with via Facebook. They became real friends. They helped me become the woman I am.

I started blogging in 2002. I started off in Xanga and MSN. Mostly I used my blog to record what was going on with me. I never knew I would form friendships that would last to this very day. My best friend I first meet online some 8 years ago in an online community site. When a fire, and my daughter being diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome happened all within 6 weeks some 7 years ago I leaned heavily on online friends to get me through. Friends like Anne Marie challenge me encourage me and make me simply a better person. I was lucky when that online friendship became a concrete one.

Then I realized I needed to stay home and be home for my daughter for a time. But how was I going to do that? I had to learn how to be frugal. Kim Clancy (@FrugalShopperCA) and the women of the Frugal Shopper  community taught me how to coupon, how to save, how to budget all while managing to raise my daughter. I learned how to organize an email campaign and how it lead to $5,000 for a school library. I will forever be thankful for the women who helped me truly become a common cents mom.

As a Toronto blogging mom I came across an another group of wonderful women. They were bloggers doing it well. For the last 3 years I have watched these women soar. Mostly I have been a fan, an admirer of these moms such as @herbadmother(Catherine Connors) and the creator of another great Canadian Mom community @YummyMummyClub(Erica Ehm). Can I admit I have loved these women from a distance.

Then last year I ventured into the world that is Twitter and well life changed again.

I met many more great bloggers like the sisters of 5 Minutes for Mom who let use their site to talk about something I felt was very important. I met Carissa Rogers (@CarissaRogers) who became a true friend and even did the header for my blog.

I met @unmarketing (Scott Stratten) one night when I came across one of his UTube videos and it had a profound impact on how I view each day. I met @chrisbrogan (Chris Brogan) who talked about trust and community. I met the girls of the #halifaxchicks and watched as a small community of women could raise thousands. They inspired me to Bust a Move.

I met a long list of names who in ways they dont even know have shaped me and molded me and made me a better mother, a better friend, a better advocate and they have listened to my voice. For that reason the tears came. I am thankful and full of love for the online community who have in essence made me who I am today-

As I go forward I want to give more and take things where I have never gone before. I want to give more, create more, inspire more. I want to go to SBCON so I can meet some of my favorite people and learn, and grow and be prepared for the next chapter in a more effective way.

If you want the chance to go to SOBCon 2010 write before noon tomorrow(Feb14th est) a post about who online has impacted you and you could end up going for free. Don’t forget to tag it with the#SOBCon2010 hashtag and then tweet it with #blogitearnit

Now each of these people, I don’t even think knows how much they have made a difference. They have helped me to grow. I am thankful for them just as I am thankful for each person who stops by and journeys with me. Thank You and know you matter to me.

We are More

Did you watch the Opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Vancouver?

I did. Many things impressed me. One that impressed me most was the Slam Poet and the words of his poem “We are More”

We Are More” by Shane Koyczan
(from the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics)

When defining Canada
you might list some statistics
you might mention our tallest building
or biggest lake
you might shake a tree in the fall
and call a red leaf Canada
you might rattle off some celebrities
might mention Buffy Sainte-Marie
might even mention the fact that we’ve got a few
Barenaked Ladies
or that we made these crazy things
like zippers
electric cars
and washing machines
when defining Canada
it seems the world’s anthem has been
” been there done that”
and maybe that’s where we used to be at
it’s true
we’ve done and we’ve been
we’ve seen
all the great themes get swallowed up by the machine
and turned into theme parks
but when defining Canada
don’t forget to mention that we have set sparks

we are not just fishing stories
about the one that got away
we do more than sit around and say “eh?”
and yes

we are the home of the Rocket and the Great One
who inspired little number nines
and little number ninety-nines
but we’re more than just hockey and fishing lines
off of the rocky coast of the Maritimes
and some say what defines us
is something as simple as please and thank you
and as for you’re welcome
well we say that too
but we are more
than genteel or civilized
we are an idea in the process
of being realized
we are young
we are cultures strung together
then woven into a tapestry
and the design
is what makes us more
than the sum total of our history
we are an experiment going right for a change
with influences that range from a to zed
and yes we say zed instead of zee
we are the colours of Chinatown and the coffee of Little Italy
we dream so big that there are those
who would call our ambition an industry
because we are more than sticky maple syrup and clean snow
we do more than grow wheat and brew beer
we are vineyards of good year after good year
we reforest what we clear
because we believe in generations beyond our own
knowing now that so many of us
have grown past what used to be
we can stand here today

filled with all the hope people have
when they say things like “someday”

someday we’ll be great
someday we’ll be this
or that
someday we’ll be at a point
when someday was yesterday
and all of our aspirations will pay the way
for those who on that day
look towards tomorrow
and still they say someday

we will reach the goals we set
and we will get interest on our inspiration
because we are more than a nation of whale watchers and lumberjacks
more than backpacks and hiking trails
we are hammers and nails building bridges
towards those who are willing to walk across
we are the lost-and-found for all those who might find themselves at a loss
we are not the see-through gloss or glamour
of those who clamour for the failings of others
we are fathers brothers sisters and mothers
uncles and nephews aunts and nieces
we are cousins
we are found missing puzzle pieces
we are families with room at the table for newcomers
we are more than summers and winters
more than on and off seasons
we are the reasons people have for wanting to stay
because we are more than what we say or do
we live to get past what we go through

and learn who we are
we are students
students who study the studiousness of studying
so we know what as well as why
we don’t have all the answers
but we try
and the effort is what makes us more
we don’t all know what it is in life we’re looking for
so keep exploring
go far and wide
or go inside but go deep
go deep
as if James Cameron was filming a sequel to The Abyss
and suddenly there was this location scout
trying to figure some way out
to get inside you
because you’ve been through hell and high water
and you went deep
keep exploring
because we are more
than a laundry list of things to do and places to see
we are more than hills to ski
or countryside ponds to skate
we are the abandoned hesitation of all those who can’t wait
we are first-rate greasy-spoon diners and healthy-living cafes
a country that is all the ways you choose to live
a land that can give you variety
because we are choices
we are millions upon millions of voices shouting
” keep exploring… we are more”
we are the surprise the world has in store for you
it’s true

Canada is the “what” in “what’s new?”
so don’t say “been there done that”
unless you’ve sat on the sidewalk
while chalk artists draw still lifes
on the concrete of a kid in the street
beatboxing to Neil Young for fun
don’t say you’ve been there done that
unless you’ve been here doing it
let this country be your first-aid kit
for all the times you get sick of the same old same old
let us be the story told to your friends
and when that story ends
leave chapters for the next time you’ll come back
next time pack for all the things
you didn’t pack for the first time
but don’t let your luggage define your travels
each life unravels differently
and experiences are what make up
the colours of our tapestry
we are the true north
strong and free
and what’s more
is that we didn’t just say it
we made it be.

What would YOU Do?

What would you do when reality sneaks up and slaps you in the face? What would you do if you realized that in reality you are earning less then minimum wage?

What would you do? and how would you get there?

I need help.

I have clawed my way off welfare. Yes, I was a welfare mom for 3 years after my daughter was diagnosed with special needs. She needed me and I was glad to be there. During that time I also volunteered alot in the community. I was the chair of my daughter’s School Advisory Council. I volunteered in the school. I volunteered at the food bank. I gave while being there for my daughter and was grateful I had that chance.

Then 2 years ago I began the process of going back to work. I got a job. I still have that job today. However the job has changed and changed dramatically.

When I was hired in Sept 2008, I was hired by a third party call center( there are lots of these out there) to work for a Fortune 500 American Internet Service Provider ( the company I work on behalf of does tv and phone too). I am the voice of the company for those who are having trouble with their internet service. When hired I asked for and got a decent day shift so I could spend time with my daughter Rachel.

I worked hard, still do. My quality scores are always in the top 10% of the company and I have never received a bad customer satisfaction survey. Infact I have been employee of the month and have qualified for excellence awards.

June 2009 rolls around and the third party call center wants to shut down the call center where I worked, and have everyone who works on behalf of the client go work from home. To keep your job you had to:

  • buy or lease a computer that met there specs
  • have high speed internet that you pay for each month
  • buy a headset that met the needs of the client as well.
  • take whatever shift came your way. Right now I work 3 evenings a week and every weekend (meaning less time with daughter).

My work related expenses total $275 a month( these are expenses that are NOT paid for by the company) when you take that off my wage of $9.55 an hour I earn $7.72 hr or $120 more then what I did on welfare in Toronto. I now earn,by working from home, less then minimum wage. What would you do? and how would you get there?

What a Successful Weekend!

This weekend it was finally Bustamove time here in Halifax and what a weekend! What a success! For Me the weekend started on Friday as I volunteered for the set up. I got there Friday morning at 8 am and found I was one of only 3 volunteers who made it through the snow and wind. We got working on setting up tables, and by noon there were about 15 of us work placing the 800 registration bags, getting the signs in place, lines were created and then there were 800 towels to fold. sany0005 What a Successful Weekend!

Here is a shot I got of the bags that each participant was to get. It was there swag bag. For us volunteers we got some left over swag.

sany0008 What a Successful Weekend!

One of the last tasks I worked on was the folding on the towels on Friday night. There was some 800 to fold! and here is what you were welcomed to when everyone was arriving Saturday morning.

sany0001 2 What a Successful Weekend!

Think each of those towels represents someone who raised $1,000 or more simply to be there to sweat for 6 hours of exersice!

On Saturday I was again volunteering but this time I was back stage as part of the production crew. I acted as one of the Production Assistants for the day. What does a production assistant do? I wrangled the talent and made sure they were ready to go on stage for their time cues.

Being backstage I  met all of the talented people who took to the stage. I had great conversations with Maria, Neville, Bill and the bands. I learned all kinds of fitness tips from the instructors who lead all day long. I was able to watch all the action from a great location.

sany0004 2 What a Successful Weekend!

One of my favorite parts of the day was when the crowd set 2 world records. One for the most people holding a 10  second hug and the longest massage chain. It was awesome!

My final highlight of the day was when Richard Simmons, the zany wonderful fitness guru hit the backstage area before he went on stage. I was able to meet him and even got a hug and a kiss. My purple volunteer shirt now wears his signature.

For me it was wonderful to be part of this great event that raised over 1 million dollars for a new state of the art mammography machine. I am thankful for the chance to give back in the community just a little and am thankful for all those from the #halifaxchicks who worked hard to reach their goal of over $10,000. Those gals made it look easy. Maybe next time I will do much better at fundrasing.

Frugal Ways For Canadians to Give to Haiti

Tonight is the telethon hosted by CTV,CBC and Global here in Canada. So it got me thinking I have already given both to the Red Cross and World Vision and I wanted to do more but I am a mom on a budget. So how could I give a little bit more?

Well today I was at Zellers and they asked if Iwanted to donate my points and since it was a way to give that would not effect my pocket book it was a big YES for me. It got me thinking how else can I possibly use points I have accumulated for Haiti

Both Air Miles and Shoppers Drug Mart have partnered with charities to help support in the Haitian relief efforts. So if you are like me, a little low on cash there are ways that you can give.Shoppers has partnered with Yele. I watched Yele on Oprah this week talk about what he saw on the ground and what they are doing, as well many Haitians I know really have seen Yele do some amazing things with his NGO.  I think it is a good way to make use of your points.  Air Miles has teamed with the Red Cross, an organization known for its emergency response. They have already on the ground the largest contingent on aid workers flown in to help.I sometimes you need to think a little outside the norm.

Now I am about to watch Canada for Haiti and the American telethon. If you can dig deep and give more I encourage you to do so.

I Need Recipe Help

Here I am challenging myself to do something new an simplify my cooking by using just one pot several times a week this year. Am I nuts? But what I really need are recipes! Do you have a favorite one pot recipe you can share?? Pretty please.

Now I will go answer some of  your questions this Backwards Day at We are That Family.

Challenging Myself and Figuring It Out

Have you ever really wondered about your relationship with God? Does your relationship with God make sense to you? For me for many many years I have struggled in my relationship to God.

I have never doubted that there is a higher power. I have never not believed in God. Just to be honest I have never felt connected to God. There is a disconnect.

Since I was a teen ager I have explored and journeyed in many denominations and faiths.

As  a teen I met the Evangelical God and Jesus Christ as a young teen. I was an active in the youth group sang in the choir and even did misson work.

Then as a young adult I embraced Mormonism. I was Mormon for many years. I even went to the temple.

Then ten years ago I began again to question faith and those questions had me in and out of christian, mormon circles and even exploring Islam.

So where am I at? What am I doing about it?

Well I am challenging myself? Why? Because I have a tween daughter who is not even sure if God exists. She does not know. Why not? Because I have not taught her. That alone does not make sense to me. So I started this year challenging myself to finally figure out this relationship I have with God.

What am I doing?  I started January 1 and over the first 90 days of this year I am:

1. Reading the bible all the way through. I am participating in the challenge as part of a group of women who are doing it together through Mom’s Toolbox.

2. Reading the Quran all the way through.

3. Reading the Book of Mormon all the way through.

All of them in 90 days..Yes that is a lot of reading! It amounts to 90 minutes a day. But it is about time this common sense mom gets her house in order with God. I want to feel that connection. I truly want to KNOW God. I want  a very intimate relationship with him. I want something I can pass on to my daughter.
