What Does $100 Buy At Walmart Canada?

On Thursday May 2nd, Walmart Canada declared it the national day of savings for stores across Canada and they challenged a group of us bloggers from across Canada to see what we could buy for $100.

Well I shop quite regularly at Walmart as it is the store at the end of my street. Really it is my corner store.

So what was my challenge since I am job hunting I decided to get outfits I could wear for work and since I work in Social Media I need everything from a dress to casual pants and tops. I took part in the challenge at the Dufferin Mall Walmart.

As soon as I got to the store I noticed prices that are absolutely great for basics.

So I wandered through to the plus section were I was able to find everything I needed for a back to work wardrobe on a budget.

So what does a $100 buy a mom on a budget?

IMG 0305 e1367794894432 224x300 What Does $100 Buy At Walmart Canada?

Bought were:

2 dresses one black and one blue $5 (clearance)and $16 = $21

2 pair of pants one black dressy pair and one grey and casual $25 and $5 = $30

2 t-shirts, one purple and one green = $16

1 pair of sandals = $29

= $96

Since I shop at Walmart frequently this was an easy challenge for me, infact since Thursday I updated my office for $40 with a new desk from Walmart for $36, and bought few things to update my kitchen for under $10 but more on them another day.

How would you spend $100 at Walmart and how far could you stretch yours?

* I did receive a $100 Gift Card from Walmart Canada to participate in the challenge but was not compensated any further and as always my opinions are my own.

Simple Tips for Going Green this Earth Day

I first wrote about Earth Day and going green back in 2007, and have talked about it ever since over a variety of posts on this blog. Earth Day 2013 is next Monday and there are so many ways to go green. Did you know by going green you are also being money smart? By making simple changes you often save money by being environmentally friendly.

So how can you make simple changes at home that make you green and save you money?

In the Furnace Room

  • Wrap your water heater with an insulation blanket
  • Lower the temperature on your water heater
  • Make sure furnace filters in forced-air systems are clean. I just changed mine.
  • Insulate the water pipes.

In the Kitchen

  • Eat your leftovers.
  • Cook meatless at least once a week. We aim for twice or more.
  • Use cloth instead of paper towels to clean. We actually do have a rag bag made from old clothes and towels.
  • Use a full dishwasher instead of washing dishes if you have an Energy Star dishwasher.
  • Use the microwave or slow cooker when you can, it is more energy efficient then the stove.
  • Use green cleaning methods. Vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda, Borax, and regular dish soap are all you really need for the majority of your household cleaning. Don’t want to mix it yourself? There are plenty of green alternatives.

In the Bathroom

  • Replace any old toilets with a low flow toilet
  • Turn off the tap when you are brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Take short showers and skip the bath.
  • Use a Diva Cup dear women if you have a cycle, great for the environment and .

In the Bedroom

  • Throw on an extra blanket instead of turning up the heat.
  • Donate any clothes to a local thrift store, or sell them at a consignment shop.
  • Do what our grandmothers did and mend clothing instead of tossing.
  • Keep the thermostat at 67 degrees in the winter and use those slippers and a sweater.

All Over the House

  • Use a welcome mat and wipe off your shoes if you wear shoes indoors.
  • Switch all your lightbulbs to CFL’s
  • Turn off the lights when you leave a room
  • Unplug and turn off things when not in use, even your computer.

Outside

  • Have a compost bin.
  • Stop using disposable bags. Have cloth grocery bags.
  • Recycle everything possible. Glass, metal, plastic, paper, cardboard (don’t forget junk mail!) and more. And participate in special item recycling days, such as for paints or electronics.
  • Whenever practical, walk or ride your bike. For trips less than 3km, it actually takes less time to bike it.
  • Work from home when you can.

These are just some tips, there are many many more, what are some of the ways you are saving at your house? Join me and the #cdnmoney community as we talk about this very topic tonight March 17th at 7 pm EST.

Now for Earth Day my family is planting trees, are you planning in participating in any group activity for Earth Day? There are many going on through out Canada check out the link to know what is going on in your neighbourhood.

3 Great and Frugal Scrubs and Masks

images 3 Great and Frugal Scrubs and MasksAfter a weekend of thinking about taking care of me, I have been thinking how can I take better care of me on a budget. One of the lessons I have learned it is good to spend a few dollars on good quality things that last longer but there are many ways you can save as well and homemade beauty is one of those ways. I love a great face mask, what woman doesn’t?

I also love Pinterest and many of these recipes are inspired from posts I found there.

I love peppermint and a great scrub and exfoliant. Did you know you can make a great peppermint scrub for a few dollars.

For A Great Peppermint Sugar Scrub

3 cups of white sugar

1 cup + 2 Tbsp. of olive oil

10 drops of essential oil (peppermint)
Mix the olive oil, sugar and essential oil together in a bowl, fill a jar ( I love my mason jars for this) and you are finished.

For A Great Oatmeal Banana Mask and Scrub

This one is my take on the OatFix that is sold at Lush. We love Lush in this house but sometimes I go with what is in the house.

1/2 cup of oatmeal
1/4 Cup of natural yogurt
1  banana chopped into thin slices
2 tbsp of honey
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl, using a fork mash the banana into the oatmeal and yogurt,
You want to get it to thick spreadable paste. If you find it stiff add a little yogurt.

A Divine Chocolate Mask

1/4 Cup of Cocoa Powder
1/2 Cup of Sour Cream
2 Tbsp of Oatmeal
3 Tbsp of  Honey

Mix all the ingredients, It will look like a cake batter. but don’t be tempted it is for your face. Let it sit for 5 minutes and then it is ready to use.

What are some of your favorite scrubs or masks?

Trim the Fat on Your Grocery Bill and Save Money

common cents mom sa

Last night for the #cdnmoney chat on twitter we were talking about all the ways there are to save at the grocery store. There are literally many ways that you can help save on your grocery bill each week. Here are just a few:

Have a Budget

So many people have an idea of what they would like to spend but never set a budget. Track what you are spending now on groceries and then ask it this really what you need to be spending each and every week. You would be surprised to find that many people can simply save cash by knowing what they want to spend. Know your money amounts.

Shop the Flyers and Make a List

Another great way to save is taking advantage of those flyers that get dropped off at your door each and every week. Don’t just toss them in the recycle pile, read through them and find the best deals. Did you know that you make a list and even use the advertised price to price match at a number of stores? Every week I make a list of what I want to buy based on that weeks sales.  Our menu revolves around the sales.

Use Coupons

I know some people hate clipping coupons but I always say if you found money lying on the road you would pick it up right, and then spend it right? So why not clip or collect and use coupons. There are many ways to get them: brand websites, Facebook pages, and apps, newspaper inserts still, hanging at the grocery store, and even by requesting them straight from the brand. There are even clipping services and coupon trains that allow you to trade coupons. My one piece of advice though when clipping coupons collect coupons for the brands you know love and use, and forget the rest or use them for trading. You never want to use a coupon for the sake of couponing.

Turn to Technology

Today one of my favorite phrases is there is an App for that. When to comes saving at the grocery store in Canada there are even a number of apps that helping Canadians cost their costs. I was recently at DX3 where I discovered the Reebee App (which is available for iphone and soon for Android and Blackberry as well). It gives you all your flyers on your phone which makes price matching at the grocery store a breeze. I used it yesterday at Walmart.

Another great app that helps you save is Checkout 51. Checkout 51 is is looking to change the world of couponing in Canada by offering Canadians cash back, without them having to use a single coupon. What you do is buy groceries at any store in Canada ( sorry Quebec is not included) and then get cash back based on the offers of the week (there are about 10 each week) . A check is sent out after you are at $20 or you can bank them for awhile. Another great way to cut your costs.

There are many more ways to save then just these what are your favorite ways to cut your grocery bill, how do you trim yours?

Fun Frugal and Free Activities for March Break in Toronto

March Break starts in just a few hours here in Toronto and there are so many things you can do. When planning activities for a teen we had to come up with a plan. Have you ever tried to survive a week without a plan for a teen?

What are some great frugal or free activities that you can have some family fun at this spring break?

1. The Toronto Public Library has many great events planned for the week ahead. Rachel wants to try out a dance class, and of course they have a couple of art activities (amine drawing and jewelry making) that she wants to try out.

2.Since Rachel loves art and is in high school, we are headed to the AGO. They have some wonderful free programs that teens can participate in.

3. At the TIFF Lightbox there will be lots of fun Workshops in Cinema 5 and there is always the Digi Play Space for kids to check out.

4. My teen is into photography  as well so we are headed to the Allan Garden Conservatory. A great chance to explore the gardens and think spring and take some photos. If your kids are into flowers might be a great place to explore.

5. Movies are a great bet too especially when they are only $2. Empire Theater have their Toonie Matinees back.We are planning on hitting a flick.

6. One of the other things we love is swimming. Here in Toronto Parks and rec offers some free swins and Tim Hortons is sponsoring many throughout the province.

7. For the animal loving kids there is always a trip to the free zoos. At the High Park Zoo you can find many exotic animals. Where Riverdale Farm is a working farm right in the city. Both of these places were favorites of my daughter when she was younger. Now she likes to go and take pictures.

8. Over the years at least one day was spent at the Shops on Steeles as they have a program that is chalked full for kids. Most days it contains a free lunch as well for kids 12 and under. We are sad that my teen is now too old for this, but if you have kids it is lots of fun and free.

Some other great fun and free activities include:
• It looks like our weather here in Toronto will be great next week so how about a walk on the boardwalk. We love taking a great walk along Toronto’s great beaches.
Another day to snap some great shots for us.

• Have an old fashion game day. On those bad weather days a game day even for teens can be fun break out the old strategy games and take a risk on a good day of fun

• My teen is taking food services in school so we will be doing some cooking and baking during March Break. Getting teens in the kitchen is always fun.

• Explore a neighbourhood in Toronto: 3 of our favorites are Kensington Market, China Town and the Greek Village on the Danforth.

• Arts and crafts- My teen just finished knitting her first scarf but she loves painting and jewelry making and it is a great way to spend some time over the break.

What are you doing this March Break?

Don’t forget to enter to win a family pass to Wizard World.

Fun Cheap Family Day Activities

2099793694 f6911d619c Fun Cheap Family Day Activities

dscn7243-1_edited © by GlennB

The following post has been written by Graham Rowlands from CheapDude.com. From cheap eats, to cheap travel tips, Cheap Dude helps you save money on everything.

Family day falls on the third Monday of the month every February in most Canadian provinces, and this year it lands on February 18th. While most provinces call it “Family Day”, if you live in Manitoba or Prince Edward Island, you will know this day as Louis Riel Day or Islander Day respectively. The only province that celebrates family day on a different day of the month is British Columbia, where it is celebrated on the second Monday of February.

If you have kids, schools around the country will be closed on Family day. This article is designed to give you some ideas of how to spend the day, while spending as little money as possible. Most of these ideas are free, or very cheap. Here are our best frugal Family Day ideas:

Skating – Assuming we don’t get a freak heat wave, chances are it will still be pretty chilly out on Family Day. Most cities around the country have skating rinks outdoors where you can take the kids to burn off some energy for a few hours. If the weather doesn’t permit, there are also many indoor skating rinks where you can take the kids for free.

Tobogganing – Another weather permitting option, but given that many places around Canada are expecting lots of snow in the next few weeks, tobogganing is a great way to spend the day. Don’t own a toboggan? Most dollar stores have plastic mat toboggans which are a great inexpensive option.

Visit Your Local Library – Many libraries organize special activities on holidays. Even if they don’t you can take the kids to pick out a book to take home or use the free internet access.

Swimming – Find a local indoor pool and take the kids for a swim. If your city doesn’t have an indoor pool try to find a friend with a condo or apartment as most come equipped with indoor pools.

Fast Food Play-lands – What kid doesn’t love fast food restaurants? Find one with a play area and let them run wild for an hour or two. It’ll help them burn off anything they eat there too!

Build A Fort – I don’t know what it is, but as a kid, building forts was so much fun! Turn one of the rooms in your house into a magical place for the kids to hang out and enjoy some snacks. If the weather permits, try building your fort out of snow outdoors!

Paint The Town – This activity requires snow on the ground. Next, fill up some spray bottles with water and food colouring. Take these spray bottles to your closest park and make some fun colourful designs in the snow.

Arts & Crafts – Head to your local craft store and grab some supplies. Let the kids go wild and design their own masterpieces. Assign prizes for the designs to make it even more fun!

Bowling – Many bowling alleys offer early week specials. Since family day falls on a Monday you can take advantage of these savings.

Have A Tea Party – Bake some delicious treats with your child then end off with a fancy tea party.

Movie Day – If you don’t feel like going anywhere, have a movie day. Pop some pop corn and have a marathon of movies. If you have more energy, get out of the house and go to the movie theater.

Board Games – This will require a slightly longer attention span, but grab some games and play. To make it interesting, switch to a new game every 30 minutes.

Make A Family Calendar – Sort through all your family pictures and assemble a family calendar to give out to other family members. This will really embrace the “family” aspect of Family Day.

Host A Talent Show – If you need to entertain multiple kids, have them put on a talent show where they can showcase their greatest skills. Have lots of prizes for all the participants.

Go To The Zoo – Most Zoo’s are open family day and some offer Family Day specials.

Visit The Museum – Slightly more expensive option, but a great way to spend a day and learn something in the process.

Hopefully something on this list sparks your interest and you are able to have a fun Frugal Family Day.

10 Fun & Frugal Valentine’s Day Date Ideas for Teens

National Smores Day © by backofthenapkin

So you have a teenager in the house like me and they want to do something special with their friends for  Valentine’s Day. This isn’t the time to encourage pairing up, as we all know these teen relationships are fragile things. Crushes, dating, etc all navigated within bodies that are going through so many changes, so what do we do?  We have encouraged  my teen daughter to simply have fun with friends, and group date. My 15 year old is not allowed to solo date and she knows it. So how can she and her friends have fun on Valentine’s Day without breaking the  parental bank, or spending all their allowance? Here are some fun frugal ideas.

1. Heart Attacks- have someone you love and adore how about taping little hearts crafted out of construction paper to their door or locker. How about making it anonymous? It is a fun way to say you care.

2. Clay Construction-We had a fun day playing with clay one Valentine’s Day and this was a frugal activity done for less then $10 a person.

3. Plan a potluck – have friends over and have each bring their favorite dessert. Yum.

4. Make it a day of loving others. How about as a group you go to a seniors center and sing to them afterwards you can stop for a cup of hot chocolate together.

5. Something as simple as ice skating can be a fun activity for teens.

6. Playing in the snow, here in Canada by Feb 14th most of the country is covered in snow so how about a day of tobogganing, and snow angels, followed by hot chocolate.

7. A Smores party. Gather your friends for a night of smores, this can be done in a fireplace.

8. A night of karaoke can also be a blast with friends.

9. Love music and dancing, got Just Dance…break it out and have a blast with friends.10. Do an old fashion exchange of valentine’s cards, remember in childhood how everyone in your class got a card no matter what? Gather up your friends and make simple cards to encourage each other. (This one is great for many a youth group).

Got teens in your house how would they want to celebrate with their friends without breaking the bank?

Do You Seek Debt Help?

When debt gets out of control it can put you in a position of financial distress, but most consumers don’t want to ask for help to get back on the right financial path. In fact, according to a CreditCards.ca survey, finances are the number one taboo topic in the minds of most consumers. As a result of this cultural norm, the majority of us don’t want to ask anyone for financial help, even when the hardship has reached a point where it’s impossible to deal with alone. Yet still, since there are ways to handle a debt problem on your own, how can you really tell when it’s time to seek debt help?

To determine if you can handle a debt problem on your own or if you need to find help, ask yourself the following three questions:

  1. How much unsecured credit card debt do I currently owe?
  2. How much available cash flow do I have in my budget?
  3. What is my credit rating?

If you have a significant amount of cash flow available at the end of each month, you may be able to implement a debt reduction strategy in order to get the debt under control, depending on the size of your debt. You may be able to make extra payments on one credit card at a time to reduce your credit card debt effectively. With each credit card debt you eliminate, you free up that much more money to pay off the next debt until you have regained control of your finances. For instance, if you have $5,000 in credit card debt, but have $150 in cash available each month, devoting that money to eliminating the debt would mean you are debt-free in less than four years.

If you don’t have the cash flow available in your budget or the debt is simply too high to pay off in a reasonable amount of time, you may still be able to eliminate the debt and handle the problem on your own if you have excellent credit scores. With excellent credit, you can qualify for the low interest rates necessary to make do-it-yourself debt consolidation options work. You may be able to use a credit card balance transfer or an unsecured debt consolidation loan to consolidate the debt into one low monthly payment. The payment schedule will be more manageable for your budget and, because the interest rate on the debt is so much lower, you can often get out of debt faster even as you pay less each month.

It’s important to note that these do-it-yourself debt consolidation options only work if you have extremely strong credit in order to qualify for the best rates. Otherwise, if you have fair credit scores or bad credit scores, you may not get approved at all or you may get approved at an interest rate that doesn’t provide the financial relief you need. What’s more, if you use a do-it-yourself debt solution in the wrong circumstances, you can potentially make your financial hardship even worse.

In this case, when you have high debt, limited cash flow and low credit scores, then you need to seek help with your debt. You may still be able to consolidate so you can get the same relief you would with do-it-yourself debt consolidation options, but you go through a credit counselling agency so your credit scores are not a factor for qualification. You can contact a not-for-profit credit counselling agency to see if you qualify for debt consolidation through a debt management program. Typically, as long as you have some means to make the reduced payment each month, you can usually qualify for the program.

18 Simple Ways to Save Money Around the House

laundry 300x201 18 Simple Ways to Save Money Around the HouseThere are so many simple ways to save around the house. As I looked around my apartment this week I made a list of all the things I could do to save money. So what are some of the ways to save some of those hard earned dollars?

To save money in the kitchen:

1. Use a microwave instead of the stove top to cook when you can. You save money and time.

2. When cooking on the stove top remember to use pot lids. By using your pot lids you are cutting cooking times.

3. Cool foods before putting them in the fridge. Every time you put hot food in the fridge you are costing yourself more money.

4. Use Timer and Temperature to cook in the oven. Every time you are opening the oven door to check you are costing yourself cash.

5. Menu planning is another way to save as you are not in that desperate panic when it is dinner time and you are less likely to stop for that fast food if you know what is on the menu.

6. Use your leftovers. Have an old fashioned left over night.

In your furnace/laundry room to save money:

1. Remember to change the filters on your furnace regularly. This simply makes sense.

2. Have you had a home audit done? By doing one often your utility company can find ways you can save.

3. Insulate your water pipes. This little cost brings great dividends.

4. When doing laundry only wash full loads of clothes. Really folks who puts 1 or two items in the washing machine. This is such a waste.

5. Always wash in cold water and use a laundry soap that is meant for cold water. This means you are reducing your costs, and saving your clothes, a double win.

6. Hang your clothes to dry. I love using my line.

Through out the house to save money:

1. Remember the simple things like turning out the lights when you are not in the room. Do those other lights really need to be on?

2. Use LED light bulbs where you can. Yes they cost more but you save in the long run.

3. Try making your own cleaning products. Need a recipe check out my How to Pinterest board.

4. Use a programmable thermostat, lower the temperature when in bed and out of the house.

5. Remember to unplug items that are not in use, ie toasters, computers etc.

6. Use low flow shower heads.
