Saving Money on Beauty: The Color and Cut

IMG00068 20120120 2035 300x224 Saving Money on Beauty: The Color and Cut On Friday I had my last day at work. I have been doing childcare since August, and then layoffs hit the families I worked with, meaning I am job hunting. To get my job hunt off with a great start I decided a new look would be good, because change is always good right?

I had dark roots, as I hadn’t cut or colored my hair since October, so I was long overdue.

I needed to do it on a budget.

I think most of like to save but love to pamper ourselves still. So I saw a sale at Walmart on the Belle Color on just the shade I wanted to give a try. It only cost me $4.96 for the color which I did on Saturday morning. IMG00102 20120121 1030 300x224 Saving Money on Beauty: The Color and Cut

I loved how the color brightened me up. Now it was time for the cut and there was no way I would take a pair of scissors to my own head so I decided I would head to Marca Beauty School at Dufferin Mall as they too had a special on.

You paid for the wash, and cut and got the blowdry which you normally pay $8 for free.

I got there about noon, and since it was Saturday they were uber busy. I had to wait almost 2 hours to get in a chair but the final result was so worth it.

Now my question to you how do you save when it comes to pampering yourself? Do you color your own hair? Cut your own bangs? Make your own scrubs?

Here is the end result..

IMG00108 20120121 1528 300x225 Saving Money on Beauty: The Color and Cut

Total amount spent $15.00

So I won twice a new hairstyle and saved as well.

Thrifting Thursday: The Perfect Winter Coat

Last week we began a series on secondhand shopping, thrifting. Today a reader shares her thrifting find. Christy found the perfect winter coat, and here is her post:

wintercoat 768x1024 Thrifting Thursday: The Perfect Winter Coat

a winter coat for $7

There isn’t a parent out there that wouldn’t agree that kids are expensive. There are always things to pay for and stuff to buy. And that is especially true when it comes to clothes. Kids never seem to stop growing.

I have two girls. They are two years apart and so I have been able to recycle clothes. There are a lot of hand-me-downs for my youngest daughter. I try to keep budget in mind when I buy clothes for the kids. I am not the kind of parent who runs to the store to get the newest, fanciest or most expensive thing. I think I get that from my parents. I am one of five children and so my parents just couldn’t afford getting everyone new clothes all the time. So we got a new outfit and new shoes at the beginning of the school year and then the rest of the year things were only purchased when absolutely needed. So as a parent, now I am always looking for ways get the best bang for my buck  and buying second hand for some things is a good way to do that.

I have a couple of places I like to check out every once in a while, especially for seasonal clothing and essentials. Once Upon A Child, Value Village and a local independent second hand clothing store for children and youth called Revolver Resale Clothing.  What I like about Once Upon A Child and Revolver is they are selective about what they buy and you can find name brand clothing at a much reduced price. When shopping at Value Village I find you have to be much more careful about what you buy, it takes time to find a gem but it is possible. One of the best things I ever purchased second hand was for my youngest daughter. I needed to pick up a winter coat for her. It was late in the season and so most retail stores have very little selection so we decided to check out Value Village. And we struck gold. We found a beautiful light weight ski jacket in her size. It clearly had never been worn and it clearly looked like a second. It had a defect in the hoodie portion of the jacket. The zipper that attached the hood to the main jacket was not sewn properly. No problem. My mother sews and it was a  pretty simple repair for her. The best part? The price. I picked up this fantastic new coat for a bargain basement price of $7. Yup you read that right. It was only $7.

So there are gems hidden in those racks of second hand clothes. You just need to have a keen eye. I don’t shop second hand for everything but it can really help keep our family on budget, especially when we are close to the end of a season and just need something to get us a few weeks until the change of weather. It is also great because it helps the environment, not just your pocket book. You get to give clothes a second life and keep them out of the landfill and that is something we all need to do more of.

Thrifting Thursday: Do you shop in thrift stores?

Do you shop in thrift stores?

I do.

There are 3 Canadian ones that I love to hit up quite regularly: Value Village, Salvation Army and Goodwill. When my daughter was younger there was also a consignment store Ages and Stages (it is on the Danforth if you are in Toronto).

I have shopped second-hand stores for as long as I can remember. Think of it like going to a garage sale without having to rummage through someone’s garage or backyard. I find it is a great way to be eco-friendly and save more than just a few dollars and if you are a vintage designer you love a good thrift store, there are so many things that can be tweaked and upscaled for your home.

Because of my love for the second-hand I have decided to start a new regular feature called Thrifting Thursday to my blog. I will be sharing what I found, how things can be reused (upscaled), and discussing thrift in general. Why be thrifty? Think more money to do the other things you want to do and love.

I also want you my readers to share your great finds, and I will be looking for guest bloggers to write about their great finds, upscales, frugal decor, etc on Thursdays.

Now about one of my most recent finds. Right before Christmas I really wanted to have lanterns on my new mantle. Yes, in the new apartment, there is a beautiful fireplace mantle that is the focal point of my living-room. So I really wanted to decorate it with lanterns, but every lantern I saw was out of my budget. Then one day, at the Goodwill store at the end of my street, I spotted 2  lanterns, silver, weathered and perfect for my mantle. Best part I got both for $3.I love when I find what I am looking for in a thrift store. What about you? Have you thrifted lately and are u willing to share your story?

Scanning Code of Practice Defined

Glass and receipt © by fernashes

Here is Canada did you know that if a retailer who uses a system that scans your item for pricing purposes and it scans the wrong amount,  you may qualify for a discount on that item?  Sometimes the store may give the item to you free simply because they made a mistake.

Most major retailers in Canada follow a voluntary rule that’s called the Scanning Code of Practice.  Here is the Rule:

If an item is scanned for a price higher than what is displayed in the store, or advertised by the store the lower price will be honored.

AND

a)if the correct price of the product is $10 or less, the retailer will give the product to the customer free of charge; or

B)if the correct price of the product is higher than $10, the retailer will give the customer a discount of $10 off the corrected price.

There is also another rule. If say you go to the register with 3 of the exact same item, and they all scan wrong, then you would get 1 free, and the other 2 the price would be adjusted to the lower price.

Remember it is a voluntary rule and here is a list of stores I found that practice, and abide by the rule:

  • The Groupe Jean Coutu (NB and Ont only)
  • Lawton Drug Stores
  • London Drugs
  • Lovell Drugs
  • Pharma-save (BC and Sask)
  • Pharma Plus
  • Canada Safeway Limited
  • The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company of Canada Limited
  • Loblaw Companies Limited
  • Sobeys Inc.
  • Metro Inc.
  • Thrifty Foods
  • Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd.
  • Co-op Atlantic
  • Federated Co-operatives Limited
  • RCC Supporting Companies:
  • Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd.
  • The Home Depot Canada
  • Canadian Tire Corporation Ltd.
  • Toys r Us
  • Rona
  • Wal*Mart Canada Corp.
  • Giant Tiger Stores Ltd.
  • The North West Company
  • Best Buy/Future Shop
  • 2 Home Hardware franchisees
  • Thrifty Foods
  • Overwaitea Food Group
  • The Harry Watson Group
  • Longos Brothers Fruit Markets
  • + 1374 independent locations

So when you are at your favorite retailer on the list be sure to watch the monitor as you may be able to get it discounted or free, or price adjusted. Another thing to note you should always check the monitor and you receipt as mistakes often happen and many times they do not favor you. You will have to ask for the discount so make sure you do, and who knows when you will get your next free item or save $10. I have saved hundreds over the years using it.

Frugal Fabulous Gifts for Teachers

November 29, 2008 © by jgrebedw

It is that time of year again, and as we tackle everything else this year we have to think of the teachers and others who need a small gift. A token of appreciation.

Every teacher including me , has had enough chocolate, enough mugs, enough ornaments..so what can you and your child do together that can be frugal, fab and thoughtful. I have some ideas.

We love giving gifts in a jar. They are easy to make and always appreciated.

Here are some easy to make Gift in a Jar Ideas:

Sand Art Brownies are a great easy to make recipe.  Layered cocoa, brown sugar, chocolate chips and pecans make this Mason jar recipe extra-special. I would just say it is yummy.

Classic Cocoa Mix is a wonderful treat. For me it brings back many a memory.

Apple Pie in a Jar is another classic treat. Think traditional.

Sugar Cookie Mix another traditional Christmas classic.

When you are thinking of gifts for teachers. Think consumable. Remember it is to show appreciation for the job they are doing.

Other ideas:

  • Make cookies or maybe even brownies, place in container that they can keep.
  • buy a simple wood frame and have your child decorate it and write a note in the frame thanking the teacher for the job they are doing
  • a small basket of classroom supplies( many a teacher pay for many items out of pocket)

I am sure you can think of many ideas. Please do share with me, what you are planning on giving to the teachers around you this year.

Getting Ready for the Holidays without Breaking the Bank

5188899842 d8be32926b Getting Ready for the Holidays without Breaking the Bank

gift-ideas-from-shopzilla © by j.patrick.1@verizon.net

Well it is that  time of the year, Halloween and Eid are around the corner and Christmas is not far behind.  The holidays are here! So how does one get ready for all these holidays and not break the bank?

For us it has never been about the amount of money we spend. It has been about creating time honored traditions and looking for opportunities to serve others.

For us it is about being smart with our dollars:

For Halloween:

  • we make costumes or shop at thrift stores
  • we do not over decorate
  • we give simple candies no big bags of treats here

For Eid:

  • set a budget
  • think what we can make- a coupon book makes a neat gift
  • make it about prayer and family
  • for the meal go potluck
  • think clothes as gifts

For Christmas

  • Again we set a budget
  • Shop with a list
  • Make sure we keep reciepts and if buying right before Christmas check for reduced prices within 2 weeks of purchase, often they will give you the sale price.
  • We set limits
  • Again we go potluck

We also look for chances to serve. In past years we have participated in food drives and sorted food and toys at local food banks, prepared shoes boxes to send to children overseas, chosen to adopt a child from overseas, adopted animals, cleaned up a neighbours yard, and shovelled snow for those who couldn’t. There are many ways that you can find to serve and often time is the best gift you can give.

When it comes to Christmas presents we also have a time honored tradition: it is called a cash Christmas. I have never bought on credit when it comes to presents. For my daughter she knows that Santa has a budget after all he has so many children he needs to prepare for. She has never gone overboard on her list. In some years I havegiven gifts that I got for free. I had collected icoke points and shopper optimum points and gave gift certificates for the movies, and bath sets that I had gotten basically for next to nothing. Here are some generic ideas that do leave cents in the wallet:

  • Homemade: one year I made soup mixes and put them in old fashion canisters I got for a $.25 each, another I made hot chocolate mixes and put them in mugs I got for $.50, another I got frames and decoratedthem with buttons and other nicknack’s.
  • Cookies with recipe card attached.
  • Git Certificates you made yourself for services you can do : ie gardening, sewing, babysitting, cooking , game time, reading, really the list is endless for this one.
  • a treasure box: get a small box at craft store: fill it with treasured notes ,etc..

So for me it just makes sense to do it  with cash and creativity, that way you really can enjoy the holiday no matter which holiday it is with less stress.

A Frugal Thanksgiving Dinner

3075824197 23566a9cac A Frugal Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving dinner © by japharl

It is that time of year here in Canada, thanksgiving will be celebrated in many homes. Even though there is just my daughter and I we still celebrate Thanksgiving with a traditional meal, then I use the left overs in the week after.

If you have ever planned a Thanksgiving meal, you know that it can get expensive. Thanks to a gift card I have to Sobeys this year I will be getting $20 off my turkey and that is a big savings for us. So how can we have a frugal Thanksgiving meal?

Limit your selection of you main dish. Have the turkey, roast beef or ham, but cook only one. Not a selection unless you are feeding an army. At the same time choose the right size bird or cut of meat. One pound of meat is usually enough, that is unless you do have plans for all those leftovers.

Balance your expensive and cheap dishes. Yams, potatoes, and carrots are all on sale this week, as is pumpkin. Think pumpkin pie, instead of say a trifle. Glazed carrots are yummy, as is sweet potato pie. Think what can I make with less expensive ingredients that will still taste yummy.

Delegate a dish or two if you are having guests. Ask that they bring a salad, or maybe the dessert, or wine.

Decorate with nature. We love using pinecones, gourds, and leaves.

Take advantage of the sales flyers. Have you checked them lately? What loss leader could you use? Take advantage while you can.

All these ways of saving have helped my daughter and I to have a frugal divine Thanksgiving meal.

Here is our Menu..

Roasted Turkey

Classic Bread Stuffing

Mashed Potatoes

Gravy

Whipped Sweet Potato Bake

Maple Glazed Carrots

Pumpkin pie and whipped cream

Rolls

This works for us. I will be sharing this as part of Works for me over at We are THAT Family.

10 Frugal Costume Ideas

66599 485174040906 527920906 7345562 251753 n2 300x225 10 Frugal Costume Ideas It is that time of year again, Blissdom Canada is around the corner and so many friends are looking for just the right costume. It takes planning, shopping etc or does it? You can have the best costume and save time, money and your sanity. My friend Dee posted some great frugal costume ideas.

I want to add to that list.

  • Self Portrait -Put a picture frame around your neck and sign your shirt.
  • Pain in the Butt-Attach a bandage or large bandaid to your bottom.
  • Eye Drops-Buy some fake eyeballs (either plastic or candy). When someone asks you what Halloween costume you’re wearing, pull them out and drop them on the floor.
  • Life of the Party-Wear a lampshade on your head, a loosened tie and carry a martini glass.
  • Got Milk-Wear a sign that says “Got Milk?”. Paint a milk mustache over your lip with make-up or other non-toxic white substance.
  • Head in the Clouds- Stick cotton balls all over your hat or visor.
  • Indentity Crisis-Put “Hello my name is…” tags with random names all over your body.
  • Undercover Cop-Just wear your regular clothes. When someone challenges your lack of a costume, whip a fake badge out of your back pocket and tell them you’re “under cover.”
  • Twitter Update-Attach a piece of paper to your shirt that says “at the costume party” (or wherever you are) with the time and date under it.
  • What am I? – If you are totally clueless, you could dress in all black and have colorful question marks all over you. If people ask you what you are, reply: “I don’t know. What am I?”

Now I am going to use one of the above costumes can you guess which one? If you are right and are at Blissdom Canada’s Costume and Karoke night come and find me, I will have something for you.
