I am A Gambler!

ace your health cover jpeg 285x280 I am A Gambler! I am a gambler! For years I have been gambling with my health. Literally I am 100 pounds overweight. Huge number right!

Well recently my twitter friend @TheresaAlbert launched another great book : Ace Your Health 52 Ways to Stack Your Deck.

I was invited to attend the launch after party. Well guess what I noticed that probably no one else did, I was the fattest woman in the room.

That night I came up and started to read her book. In the beginning of book there is a quiz about lifestyle and health. Well I took the quiz and found out I am a Spade. Basically that is the lowest score one can get as Theresa divided people into 4 categorizes: diamonds, clubs, hearts and spades. Diamonds have there acts together while spades are those well who are perhaps just getting their acts together.

To get your act together takes time. Theresa realizes that in her book using the 52 cards in a deck of cards to help us get our acts together over the course of 52 weeks. Each card gives us a change to make that will lead us to health. Since Theresa is a nutritionist the book is big on food tips, but exercise does come into play later in the deck as well.

I am using Theresa’s book this year to hep me get healthier. I need to stop gambling with my health. So each week I will writing about what  I am doing to get healthier. I think the accountability will be good for me.

Why am I doing it finally now? I was recently in my doctor’s office and have to have surgery in April. My doctor wants me to lose some weight before the surgery to make it easier on my body. I also am tired of being the fattest woman in the room.

Frugal and Fit and Busting a Move

Frugal and Fit and Busting a Move Well it has been awhile since I updated my blogging friends on how goes my journey on being a faboulous frugal and fit 45 year old mom who is ready to bust a move.

Well I have been exersicing some but not getting to the gym near enough.

I have been drinking lots of water which is good for this mom who was and is a Diet Coke addict.

Two weeks today I will be 45! Yes, I am a Christmas babe.

Now as I wrote here about a month ago I signed up for an event called Bust a Move. It is a huge fundraiser here in Nova Scotia that will help this community get a much needed first rate Breast health center.

Each woman who signs up has to raise $1,000…yes I said $1,ooo

The $1ooo is for a great cause and I think most of know at least one person effected by breast cancer. For me this is rather personal as I bust a move in memory of my grand mother who fought this dreaded illness. My grandmother died a few years ago now as the cancer spread throughout her body. So I am bringing her strength and courage along with me.

Now if you would like help me reach my $1,000 goal (maybe as a birthday prez for me) you can:

1.donate on my personal page or

2. Purchase a Food for Boobs Cookbook here. At $20 plus shipping this cookbook makes a great gift and you get to help Nova Scotia get that first rate Breast Health Center. The book was put together with recipes from a number of the #halifaxchicks on Twitter.

3. I am part of the #halifaxchicks team and well one of the fundraisers we are doing is a raffle. You make a $10 donation and your name goes in the draw for a bunch of great local treats. IF you are in Halifax this is the deal of the month! You can get a ticket here.

Help Me Bust A Move!

Last night I got to go to my very first Tweet Up here in Halifax. It was awesome! All of  women there are on Twitter (home of the micro blog). Got to meet some amazing women and then we had a brief presentation about a great cause-Bust a Move!

 Help Me Bust A Move!

Bust a Move is a new grassroots fundraising effort here in Nova Scotia who’s goal is a world class breast center here. There is a huge need here. We need better equipment and everything in one local not everything spread over a very large campus as it is now.

The QEII and IWK Foundations inviting me and  you to” join them for Bust a Move – a very special fitness extravaganza guaranteed to challenge the body and uplift the spirit! The Halifax Metro Centre will come alive when 1,000 participants and hundreds of volunteers unite in support of world-class breast health services in Nova Scotia.”Yeah there is a limit on the number of participants, so sign up now if you want you want to join. There will be 6 and yes, I said 6 hours of fitness! My goal be fit enough to last to last the 6 hours. We will be doing yoga, zumba and so much more.

Do you want to know who one of the celebs instructing us will be? Can you say someone who wears short shorts, do I need to say more?

Now here is the catch, each of us 1,000 participants MUST raise $1,000 for the cause. That is the goal!

Now if you want to help me, there are a few way you can.

First you can go to my donation page here.

 Help Me Bust A Move!

If you want to send a check instead of credit card you can, there is a form you can print, fill out and send.

Second you can donate through paypal. I set up a donation button.Unfortunately for some reason it is not pasting right into my WordPress blog. So if you want to donate via paypal you can send the money through my paypal account which is cahollie@hotmail.com

Now here is the good news 100% of funds raised are going to get much needed new digital diagnostic equipment for the  unit. Can you say you help, your donation will help save the lives of women here in Nova Scotia.

Now I know not everyone can give, if you are local they are looking for volunteers and as well me personally I can use prayer support and

If you have read this far, thanks, already, I do appreciate it…Watch me become a fit, frugal, fabulous 45 yr old who can stay on the exersice mat for 6 hours for a great cause. Help me Bust a Move anyway you can!

Works for Me Wednesday:From Diet Coke to the Frugal Drink H20

Works for Me Wednesday:From Diet Coke to the Frugal Drink H20I have something major to admit here! I have been a diet coke drinker for years. I loved my diet cokes, all my friends will tell you. I always had to have a can, glass bottle on hand. I was an addict.

Well something that is working for me, I have given up my addiction. I must of spent at least $50 a month on soda, can you believe that? A self claimed frugal mom wasting money like that. Well I did, but no more. By giving up my addiction I can pocket $600 a year and well that is money I can use in other places and for other things.

What is in my glass right now? WATER. Yes,  I said water! I have made the switch and I am finding myself less thirsty, caving sweets less and fuller. How is that possible? I just now I am.

The scienctists say we are 70% water so I know this is good for me.

I drink my water with a wee bit of lemon and lots of ice. How do you like yours? Are you a water drinker yet? Can you think of a better summer drink to cool you down?

Now I am off to We Are THAT Family to see what works for everyone else this week.

PS For a great list of 33 things you can do with Kids that are free this summer read here.

What Works for Me : Saving Money on Dental Care

6a00d83451c5ac69e20112791ced0428a41 What Works for Me : Saving Money on Dental CareLast January I wrote a post on getting dental care on the cheap. To be honest it is one of my posts that gets the most hits. People are looking for ways to save on dental care. So here is my short list of how I saved for years when I didn’t have dental benefits. I now work at a job where I do and I am thankful for that. So how did I manage dental care when I had a very limited budget:

1. First we have fairly decent dental hygiene practices here at home. Meaning we brush and floss well. I also bought a $6 tube of PreviDent 5000. It is a sodium fluoride dental cream. My dentist recommended it for my daughter. She brushes with it once a week.

2.We found a good local dental hygiene school. These places let you get cleanings done for next to nothing. In most of the major cities you can find these: here in Canada I know of ones in Halifax, Hamilton, and Toronto. You can often save hundreds but you will spend a few visits in the chair, but think clean teeth for less then $50.00 and sometimes even for free.

3. Find a close by dental school for the major work. Here in Nova Scotia there is Dalhousie University and in Toronto there are two really good schools George Brown and University of Toronto. Most universities or college campuses that have a dental program are always looking for new patients. The one drawback there is a bit of a wait but the good news is if there is an emergency you can always call and they can usually get you into there emergency clinic within a few days.

For me when I was on a fixed income these few things helped me and my daughter. Now I still need some more work done but I am getting there.

Now there are many things that work for many people and we all share them at We are that Family on Wednesdays. Come join the fun. As well, if you know other sources for great dental care that can leave you with cents in your pocket book let me know.

Roo’s Story

Roos StoryI read this article this morning in the Huffington Post and decided it was time I shared the story of my daughter Roo.

Roo was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico in 1998. I had a rough pregnancy with lots of stress but she came out a beautiful 7 lb, 13 oz girl. Iwas a very happy mom. I found out quite quick I couldn’t breast feed, so I had to turn to formula. Our first few months on formula well weren’t the best. Roo couldn’t keep it down. She literally could vomit across the room. I know not a nice picture. At age 2 months thanks to a wonderful nurse practitioner there in Carlsbad, Roo was diagnosed as protein intolerant. She was put on a special formula (Neutramagin).

She was growing healthy and strong, proteins were kept at bay so her digestive system would have a chance to grow and develop. She was a strong healthy little girl. When I took her for her 18 mo baby check up. By this time we had moved to Toronto, Canada and her doctor decided we would put off her vaccine because of the makeup of the vaccine and Roo’s body inability to handle it.

Well by age 4  Roo was getting ready to go to school and needed that vaccine or we couldn’t register by this time doctors thought her digestive system should handle it. Well lets just say within weeks Roo had many of the symptoms of autism, or sensory disorders.

Here is just some of the things that Roo experienced shortly after vaccination:

  • insomnia ( Roo was a great sleeper when she was little, now she wakes up at least once a night, sometimes more, until the last 6 months it was often multiple times a night).
  • sensory integration issues ( bright lights and the feel of certain textures on her skin). Getting her to wear socks is still an issue. As well Rachel has a problem with bright artificial light. Can you say sunglasses inside?
  • misunderstanding social cues
  • screaming fits , I can remember being at church and having to take my daughter out of the children’s program many a Sunday because of behavioral issues, I can remember one Sunday quite well. Roo was in the midst of a fit and I was holding her and I can remember the looks of some of the other parents. Church and Roo so far have not been a great experience. Roo often cant still for an hour, she tilts the chair she sits on, etc, and unless you have trained children’s leaders experienced with special kids it is more then a challenge, it is a nightmare for both child and parent.  Too be honest I became more and more discouraged after attending church then encouraged.
  • food sensitivities ( I think these are part of the original diagnosis)
  • loss of  small eye hand coordination. Rachel had great small finger control for a young child. Ie she has using scissors and cutting well, holding a crayon well etc.  She lost that, holding a pencil became a chore, printing well lets just say Roo still does not write in cursive and her printing is what you would see in grades 1 or 2. For her printing is a real chore. She would rather tell you the answer.
  • oral fixations. Roo for the longest time would chew on her clothes. The ends of her sleeves would quickly become a ruined mess. Can you see why most of her tops came from Value Village, or thrift stores. We went thorough alot of them!

As she got into school she had trouble from grade one on. The third week of school I had the teacher tell me my daughter was ” hell to teach” and that is a direct quote.  I quit my job when Roo was in grade 1 and took part time employment so I could be more actively there for my daughter as we tried to get a proper diagnosis.

The full diagnosis didn’t come till grade 2. Roo is very smart, tests at the 97% level which mean she borders on gifted, has an LD and walks a fine line between Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD. Depending on the day you will get a differing diagnosis.

Roo at school until this year, had an EA for grades 3 and 4 and was integrated for most part in the regular classroom. This year when we moved to Nova Scotia she was not given an EA, and is in a split class ( gr 4 and 5). She has only been accommodated for her LD, nothing else. To this date I have yet to see an IEP in place for her. She is struggling with social issues that include bullying and isloation. She is also becoming depressed so I worry alot as she approaches the teen years. Special kids are known to have higher rates for teen suicide, dropping out and drug use.

If all of this can be linked back to one needle, maybe just maybe we can save a child from having to go through some of the hardships that Roo faces or faced. Maybe we do need to ask more questions of our doctors. I don’t know the solutions, as a mother I simply know that for me, common sense tells me I was wrong to let my daughter have that needle. But then again hindsight is twenty twenty they say.

What Works for Me: Free Diet and Exersice Help

I said check back with me, and really this past week has been super busy at work so no posts. I have set a goal this year especially after weighing myself recently and finding out I really am a FAT mom! I weight 270 pounds and have decided that I really do need to get a handle on this NOW.

So what am I using because most of you know I am a frugal mom. I love Sparkpeople. It is a get website that not only helps one live healthier. It is also free! No need for paying for a program with the diet and exercise suggestions that come from Sparkpeople. I really enjoy the community on it, the recipes, the journals :all will help me get a handle on my weight and lifestyle issues.

Roo and I both weighed in this week. My daughter does not need to lose any. She weighs in at 82 pound, 4’11 at age 11. So she is doing just fine, but I think she really wants to encourage her mom to get healthy. I am walking every day even if it is just a little, but this is where I need to do more. I need to exercise more.

Now I am off  again to see what is working for others this 1 st Wednesday of 2009. Why not drop by Rocks in my Dryerfor what are usually a great array of posts on what works. I will also be blogging this year on the challenges of losing pounds frugally and trying to have fun doing it. So check back ok!

Getting Dental Work Done the Cheap Way.

Well today I am off for to the dentist. Since mid December I have been in dental pain and too chicken to go to the dentist. First here in Toronto there aren’t many dentists who will take an Ontario Works client. When you are poor and live in the city it is harder to access dental care at least it is here in Canada. But luckily I found one who will do the emergency treatment that I need. But for the long run she was telling about some programs that are here. Since then I have found that many major cities across Canada and even North America have options similar to this. So why not take care of your mouth?  For a long time for me it was a fear factor. Don’t know why or where it began but I feared the dentist.

So where to go here in the city first to get my teeth cleaned there are several options George Brown offers free cleaning, as do many other private colleges here in the city that train dental hygienists. So no more excuses for teeth not being cleaned, you do however have to be available for about 5 appointments.  For things like needed fillings, root canals and like there is the University of Toronto and there is a cost. The cost is 1/3 what you would have to pay at a dentist’s office.   In Hamilton they have the Dental Bus for emergencies and a local dental hygenie college so i do remember what is there.

So after many years of hating my mouth it is time that I attack the issues of poor dental care. If you are anything like me you can do it too just search out your local programs.
