New Year, Creating, Connecting, Cultivating

beautiful happy new year 2012 in different styles 47 New Year, Creating, Connecting, Cultivating

With the end of 2011, we welcome a new year into our lives. To be honest I am glad to see this year close, yes there were many great blessings that came my way, and many a highlight on the ride, but for every highlight there was a low time as well. I can definitely describe 2012 as nothing but a rollercoaster ride.

As I look ahead I want to embrace the New Yer. I want to take into my hand with joy and optimism.

I was over on Chris Brogan’s blog as I often am and he shared his 3 words. After reading his and tons of others in the comment section and on Twitter I thought what a great Idea.

Last Year, in 2010, at Blissdom Canada people were asked to come up with one word . I came up with undaunted.Persitance, patience, persevering are all part in parcel with being undaunted. I kept that word in 2011 and I did have to persist, and persevere and boy did I ever need patience. So I will keep undaunted in my back pocket.

But as I go forward I need change, I need to do more than just be patient and persevere. I need to CREATE, CONNECT, and CULTIVATE.

Create- I want to create a healthier me, a better writer, a stronger woman

Connect- I want to connect more, get out to events, engage more, share more, have real conversations that help others

Cultivate- I want to cultivate the relationships that I have just begun with my fellow bloggers, with the online community, with brands, and with opportunities that might come my way.

I want 2012 to be a great year of creating, connecting and cultivating and I wish the same for each of you my readers as well.

If I was dreaming BIG for 2012:

I would see me as a great community manager somewhere, or as a digital sales/ customer service rep

So what are you dreaming of? and what are your words or goals?

Helping in the Haitian Relief Efforts

As I sat and watched the news this week that came from Haiti, at first all I could do was cry and remember. I remembered what is was to lose every thing. I remember what it is like to lose everything or almost  everything you physically owned ( home  and everything in it) and to know even though your family is safe there was loss of life just feet from where you were. I also know what it  is like when a hurricane damages your home so bad that it takes months to recover. First I was over come with emotion..Those emotions turned into a desire to help. I have lived through homelessness, a hurricane, and a fire.

I gave immediately at first to the Red Cross. Why the Red Cross? When I was going through the fire literally literally they were there within minutes. When it comes to emergency responses they are well trained and get the job done. They work with other agencies and see that needs are met. Six years ago my daughter and I lived in Hamilton and lived through the experience of  being rescued by fire fighters in the dead of the night and then watched as the 30 unit apartment complex next door burned . A young woman died just 5 feet from where my young daughter slept and the other side of the wall. We got out. She did not. I have always been thankful we did. It was in the immediate hours after our little disaster I saw how fast and efficiently the Red Cross can work. Within hours we were being taken to a hotel where we stayed for the first 72 hours after the fire. Clothing came. Food came. We were taken care of. They helped us rebuild quite quickly. We were able to go back in. Our neighbors could not. Some on the lower floors were allowed in to get some things out. The 30 unit complex left families homeless and it was the Red Cross who came to the rescue. For us we went in and cleaned up the broken windows, threw out many smoke filled things, covered windows and had to move weeks later to a safer place.

I saw the work the done in conjunction with other agencies when living in Toronto and volunteering with the Salvation Army’s emergency response team. When 900 people were displaced due to an explosion and fire the 2 agencies  worked together to see that the immediate needs of the people where met. When it was known that they would not be able to return to their homes for months. These agencies worked with others to make sure each person had shelter.

If you are Canadian and can give please do give. The Canadian government is matching our giving up to 50 million dollars.

There are many agencies you can give to, and many ways to give.

Here is a list of some:

To donate just $5 you can text:

Wireless companies are providing a way to donate $5 by texting.

• “Yele” to 501501 to donate to Wyclef Jean’s Yéle Foundation;

• “Haiti” to 85944 to donate to Rescue Union Mission and MedCorp International;

• “Haiti” to 25383 to donate to the International Rescue Committee;

• “Haiti” to 90999 to donate to the Red Cross in the U.S.;

• “Haiti” to 45678 to donate to the Salvation Army in Canada (Canada only).

Now here is a list of charities with WELL known ties and established ties in Haiti. Consider them please:

The Red Cross ( this agency already has a team of 50 of its best emergency response personnel on the ground and they are working tirelessly with other agencies to get needs met)

The Salvation Army already had and has personel on the ground in Haiti and a team of Canadian volunteers are enroute today to help distribute aid.

Doctors Without Borders/ Medicins Sans Frontieres is another agency on the ground. Many of their doctors and nurses who were in Haiti are missing. They are in need of medical supplies.

World Vision is another agency that had been working in Haiti. I have been following them on Twitter. I am a World Vision sponsor. So this one is near and dear to me. We will be giving more to them in the weeks ahead.

The Humanitarian Coalition. Oxfam, Care, and Save the Children have teamed together to offer assistance.

This is just a small list of agencies who are on the ground already. They are working to get help to the 3 million Haitians effected.

Now the blogging community is also giving in there own way and Money Saving Mom has complied a list of bloggers who have posts about how to help and what they are doing. Some bloggers are saying leave a comment and I will give. So if you can do check out some of them.

Well I am already giving and my daughter and I will be giving more in the months ahead as the need will be there for a very long time. What are you  doing?

Remember if you can not give , you can still do something: You can pray. So what are you doing? What have you done?

A Decade In Review

It’s hard to believe that the first decade of the millennium will soon draw to a close. I remember 10 years ago I was 35 and had a toddler in tow. I was just getting used to being a single mom.

Now 10 years later so much has changed and some things have remained the same..

What did 10 years bring my way?

I lived in 5 different locales! Toronto. Montreal, Hamilton, New Glasgow and now Halifax and not in that order.

I started the decade out of work. I went to school. Got Microsoft certified in all the Office programs and got a job that first year. I was a working single mom till Rachel turned 5.

Well working did not last long because midway through this decade my daughter was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome.

I became a welfare mom who was there for my daughter when she needed her mom the most. I spent 3 years getting her an IEP at school and the support she needed while learning as much as I could about the illness. It was one of the best things I ever did.

I survived a fire that destroyed the 30 unit complex next door and left my apartment unsafe for me and Roo. Great friends helped me pick up the pieces.

I survived a bout with cervical cancer.

I did not work a full time job for about 4 years. I did have 2 part time ones and did plenty of volunteer work at my daughter’s school and at the local food bank.

I learned how to be frugal. I learned how to budget. I learned how to use coupons. I learned how to make use of things like freebies and contests. I learned how to live simply and I am loving it!

I re-entered the workforce after becoming an internet tech. I love helping others get and stay connected!

I became a blogger and met many great friends through several of my blogs over the years. I have owned 7 different blogs- all of them mom blogs mostly.

I entered the world of Social Media this year and learned all about Twitter and Facebook. I am loving the new connections they bring.

Really in 10 years many things change..and I wonder what will the next 10 bring?

What do you see in your future?

What was your favorite thing of the last decade?

Frugal and Fit and Busting a Move

Frugal and Fit and Busting a Move Well it has been awhile since I updated my blogging friends on how goes my journey on being a faboulous frugal and fit 45 year old mom who is ready to bust a move.

Well I have been exersicing some but not getting to the gym near enough.

I have been drinking lots of water which is good for this mom who was and is a Diet Coke addict.

Two weeks today I will be 45! Yes, I am a Christmas babe.

Now as I wrote here about a month ago I signed up for an event called Bust a Move. It is a huge fundraiser here in Nova Scotia that will help this community get a much needed first rate Breast health center.

Each woman who signs up has to raise $1,000…yes I said $1,ooo

The $1ooo is for a great cause and I think most of know at least one person effected by breast cancer. For me this is rather personal as I bust a move in memory of my grand mother who fought this dreaded illness. My grandmother died a few years ago now as the cancer spread throughout her body. So I am bringing her strength and courage along with me.

Now if you would like help me reach my $1,000 goal (maybe as a birthday prez for me) you can:

1.donate on my personal page or

2. Purchase a Food for Boobs Cookbook here. At $20 plus shipping this cookbook makes a great gift and you get to help Nova Scotia get that first rate Breast Health Center. The book was put together with recipes from a number of the #halifaxchicks on Twitter.

3. I am part of the #halifaxchicks team and well one of the fundraisers we are doing is a raffle. You make a $10 donation and your name goes in the draw for a bunch of great local treats. IF you are in Halifax this is the deal of the month! You can get a ticket here.

Becoming a Grandmother of Sorts and Wanting Tips

762ed59a2a5b8a7a400f3acf528edbb7 Becoming a Grandmother of Sorts and Wanting Tips Today I will become a grandmother of sorts and I need help. Many years ago I was married to man who had 3 young children. When I was married to him we had full custody of all 3 children. Today my oldest in my heart will become a father. Right now as I type my son ( well adopted into my heart son) is getting his wife to the hospital for a c section.  A little while from now our family will welcome our newest family member and my daughter will be an aunt.  We are excited and happy!

Now I also know a new mom needs lots of advice. They need tips. they need tricks of the mommy hood. Now Pampers has joined with Mom Central on a project called “A Parent is Born”. Together they want to create insightful, community-driven tip sheets for new and expectant parents to download and share in their own mommy circles. And Canadian moms; they need our help.( but really these would be great for any mother).

My daughter in law could use this. Now they are asking for tips on sleeping and going back to work. Got one then go here an enter your best tip. You could end up winning one of the 25 $20 gift cards or the grand prize of $500 cash and we can all use extra cash at this end of time of the year right. (Contest is open to Canadian Residents)

Attitude is Everything

Attitude is Everything Attitude is absolutely everything especially when you live on a tight budget.

What is yours when it comes to what is in your life?

For me and my daughter we have always tried to have an attitude of gratitude. I think it is one of the best attitudes you can have no matter if things are hard, difficult or worse there are always things you can find to be thankful for.

On Thursday me daughter and I stopped again and counted our blessings. We listed off things we were thankful for each and every day. I think an attitude of gratitude helps with contentment and helps to curb the I wants and out of control spending.

Roo listed off her list and I listed off mine before we dined on turkey:

My list of what I was thankful for:

  1. I am thankful for my belief in God(Allah). It keeps it all real for me.
  2. I am thankful that this fat mom is healthy.
  3. I am thankful for work that does help others.
  4. I am thankful for my daughter who amazes me every day.
  5. I am thankful we have a warm home and food.
  6. I am thankful for my friends who bring joy and laughter into my life on a regular basis.
  7. I am thankful I can read and learn and grow.
  8. I am thankful I can dream.
  9. I am thankful that I have common sense.
  10. I am thankful for each of you my readers.

What are you thankful for each day?

When Life’s Up and Down’s Happen

Everyone has ups and downs. I lately have been having a little financial down and I was not properly prepared for it. I did not and do not have the emergency fund in place that I should. Usually I am doing much better with budgeting and being ready for the rainy days but the last few months have been hard.

I made a sudden move that was needed and when you move there are extra costs. I had not budgeted properly for these.

I helped a family member with a loan that well left my savings account depleted.

Then I got sick.

So what do you do when life’s up and down’s effect your pocket book? I  know for me I have to tighten my budget to get back on track. I have to do better. I know the rules …Pay yourself first.. put away for the rainy days but I haven’t been doing it right. I have dipped into it. I can’t being do that. It doesn’t make sense.

I want to be real and honest here on my blog. I am learning I have come a long way since the days of being a welfare mom but I still have far to go on the road to financial freedom.

We are THAT family

We are THAT familyMy friends over at We are THAT Family are celebrating there second blog anniversary and asked that we share why we are THAT family.

In our Family it is just me and my daughter Roo, it has been that day since she was 2 days old.

We are THAT family because:

-who else was in a Canadian emergency room on 9 11 because her young daughter swallowed a toonie that made it’s way into her lung pipe- can you say 7 hours of cardiac care? can you say surgery? THAT is us.

-what other family do you know gets rescued by firefighters in the middle of the night as there apartment complex burns to the ground. Can you say starting over from just your undies?? THAT is us. Had to admire the firefighters though.

-what other family do you know where the daughter likes to strip and walk around naked cause she dont like the feel of her clothes. THAT is us.

-what other daughter likes to insert items into parts of her body? can you say beads up the nose, and a screw where no screw should ever be? can you say we know the emergency room? THAT is us.

-what other family deals with learning disabilities, allergies and sensitivities every day. T HAT is us.

For all those reasons and so many more we are THAT family and glad to be part of the We are THAT family bloggershpere.

Eid Murbarek

Eid Murbarek Happy Eid! Today was and is my first Eid!

Yesterday we decorated and cleaned the house.

This morning got up early..opened gifts and it was off to prayer.

Some random  thoughts about today and the end of Ramadan:

1. It was so good to see so many nationalities and cultures bowing together to worship one God. That was cool.

2. It was also good to Praise God in unison.

3. My 11 year old daughter Roo loves Eid so far. She says it is better then Christmas.

4. The food over Ramadan and today has been a yummy delight. We have tried many new foods.

5. Prayer is more then just mere actions 5 times a day. God should be ever part of every moment and intention.

6. The Women’s section of Eid prayer is the worse place to be. You can not hear the lesson or speaker. Where I was it was all noise and the the noise was not from children but from women talking. I think a lesson in respect is needed by many. Really it was the one time today I felt like crying because I was trying so hard to hear and couldn’t. This was the only thing that put a damper on my day.

7. The kindness and welcoming arms of sisters. I arrived at a new Masjid right after start of Ramadan and have been able to meet some great sisters, I pray our friendships grow.

Overall my first Ramadan and Eid were filled with learning and happiness and for that Iam thankful. I pray you all are enjoying your day.

This post will be crossposted on my other blog Simply Hollie.
