Tea Time

sany0027 Tea Time

Tea time works for me. Steeping up a pot of tea and having a great conversation is always a wonderful way to spend part of the day. Last week I inherited my grandmother’s tea cups. Some of these great fine china cups are over 60 years old. It has been a delight to enjoy a cup of my favorite blend. Tea time works for me. Are you a tea drinker? If so what is your favorite kind? and do you have a favorite spot for that great cup?

WFMW: 7 Frugal Valentine Ideas

love note WFMW: 7 Frugal Valentine Ideas It is that time of year and for some romance is in the air.

For me I am single yet again this Valentine’s Day but that is ok with me. I still have lots of love to share and I love to share it with my family.

What are some frugal ideas that have worked for me over the years?

1. I find words make for a great show of love. I get red construction paper and write out the character attributes I love about my daughter. I think it is a cool and specific way to show your love, and think it could be done for under $2

2. I have created cards many times over the years. I have used my scrap booking supplies or even Rachel’s art supplies. A handmade card shows effort and you care.

3. Another one I have used in the past are love coupons. I printed off coupons that could be used for many things that showed my love. For coupons for my sweetheart: a massage, a bath, control of the remote were just a few of the ones in my book.

4. I always love a single flower. I think a well chosen single flower can make a big impact.

5.Music is something I have always loved sharing. If they are an exercise hound how about creating the perfect workout  CD or if you are doing it for your sweetie I love LOVE songs.

6. Lipstick notes on bathroom mirror are another way to show your love.

7. My last idea I used years ago when married. Table for two..after kids asleep or occupied, a late night dinner just for 2. Make your spouse a nice spaghetti dinner or how about doing a simple fondue?

Sometimes the simple things can have a big impact and show you care without stretching your wallet too much. I

Now I am off to see what is working for you this week at We Are THAT Family.

The Un Resolution

2154252370 f7d7a38a38 m The Un ResolutionHow many of you have ever made a New Year’s Resolution? I have!  In the past I would have my list and boy some of the things I vowed to tackle. Well never again!

Yes I have things I want to change. Things I am working on goals and themes I want in my life. Personally  I know me and I don’t do well with as of January 1 I will do it. For me tackling a challenge that way does not work. For me it is just plain stupid.

So what does work for me?

When I want to tackle something what do I do?

1. I ask myself is this something I really want for ME? What is my motivation? I then write out my motivation. An example of this 2 years ago I wanted OFF welfare and wanted to be working as well as giving in my community. Why? Well my motivation was I wanted more cash and I wanted to feel like my contributions mattered and that weighed on me very much at the time. I wrote out in my journal about my whys and well then I went to step 2.

2. I came up with a plan. Re-entering the workforce after time off for any reason can be daunting . It becomes twice as daunting when you have a special needs child who will need after school and summer care (that in itself took a careful plan).

3. I wrote my plan out. Okay this is when you have to ask your self . How am I going to get this thing? What things that can I do? Write out the baby steps I did. Then I wrote out the dates of when things had to be done by..

4. I advertised my plan. My goal. I shared it with friends, with family and then I began to network.  I needed to build a community that would encourage me and help me. I in turn would be doing the same for them.

It took me 9 months to find a job that fit the bill for me. I have had that job for 16 months now. I work for a call center ( yes, she is one of those people) but the neat thing for the last 6 months I have done my job from HOME.  Every night if you are a Comcast customer in the need of internet support you could be reaching me at home. It is a pilot project that I am thankful to be part of and I have enjoyed working for Convergys and their client Comcast. I was able to get exactly what this mom wanted and needed.

Now this week I turned 45! Yeah I am an old maid! So what are my motivations for 2010? I want to be a FRUGAL ( that ain’t going to change), FIT ( that means yeah I am going to the gym) and FABULOUS (that means giving and enjoying life and each moment it gives me) and FAITH FILLED( that means my relationship with God needs some work)…these are the things I am working on..and I don’t need a New Year’s Resolution to get me going.

Are you making resolutions?  or do you have goals at all? I really would love to know? and do you have a plan?

Over the next couple of days here on my blog I will be reflecting on the past decade and how I became the Common Cents Mom I  am and how certain events changed and molded this decade.

This post post will be shared as part of the Tackle Me Tuesday on 5Minutes for Mom and as part of What Works for Me on We are That Family.

Works for Me: Remembering

wfmwbannerkristen1 Works for Me: RememberingToday I would like to step out of frugal mom mode and take a moment and remember.

This November 11th, this day set aside to remember the fallen and those who served and served this mom remembers:

My cousin who has served 3 tours in Iraq. My other cousin who is an active member of the Canadian Navy.

My ex husband who served in the American Forces and came home from war disabled.

My stepfather who served during the Korean War.

My uncle who was a navy diver.

My grandfather Hilliard Kain, who like is son was a navy man, who served in WW2

My grandfather Norman Pollard who was one of our Canadian POW’s.

My great grandfather Charles Pollard who served in WW1.

Today I stopped at 11 am and remembered all who serve and served, because I can. Because I am free.

Thank you to them your acts are not forgotten!

How and who do you remember this day?

Remembering works for me, I pray it works for you as well. Now I am off to visit We are THAT family to see what is working for you this week.

Some Great Freebies for the Holidays

Don’t You love a Freebie? I know I do. Now some of my recent finds are down loadable, some you learn from and well some are for the kids or a great gift idea.  Freebies work for me.

1. A couple weeks ago I found a great way to learn American Sign language for free. My daughter and I use sign as a way to communicate and keep it secret..She has even learned how to sign certain songs as a gift to me. So if you want to learn something new this holiday season why not learn a sign or two.

2. Yesterday I was on one of my favorite magazine’s website and came across this snuggie (yes the ones you see on tv) and it is a freebie with a string attached( a survey after receipt)

3. A wonderful down loadable Hello Kitty Calendar also appeared in my inbox yesterday. What a great gift idea for a girl on your list? You do have to sign up for their email.

4.Another great one for the workout lover is this free mix of music for workouts. It is from Roxy!

5.Now this final one is a great idea for the family that likes to give, now just remember this giveaway begins on January 1, 2010. If you volunteer as a family you each can get a one day pass to a Disney Park. How great is that you give some time and you get some fun! Think of volunteering as a family and then enjoy a day on Disney.

Now are there any other great freebies for both Americans and Canadians? I am sure there are and you can share share them with me in the comments and I will post them in the days ahead. Freebies always work for me, especially at holiday time. I am now off to We are That Family to see what works for you.

Works for me: The Basics Must Knows for Twitter

wfmwbannerkristen3 Works for me: The Basics Must Knows for TwitterA number of months ago I signed up for Twitter, at first I felt lost in an ocean of tweets..then one of my tweets was even quoted in the New York times (yea , I was one of those who welcomed Oprah to Twitter and well my tweet made the paper). Then I thought I can master this. I feel I have. Twitter works for me.

Now on Monday night here I went to Halifax Tweet Up with the #halifaxchicks. What a great bunch of women! Now some of them are newbies to twitter, didn’t know what a hashtag or a retweet are so I promised a little lesson on my blog today. So girls this post is dedicated to you! Now on Monday night why did hashtags and retweets become so important. Well the #halifaxchicks are trying to raise $10,000 to help buy new diagnostic equipment for a new state of the art breast health centre here in the Maritimes. We are participating in an event called Bust a Move. We are raising funds, havings our buns, and maybe even breaking 2 world records, we shall see.

So what are the basics for a Twitter newbie? So what is with the lingo?

First the first 5 must dos:

1. Get an avatar up,nothing says newbie more then a blank avatar..

2. Fill out the bio, tell us who you are, why we want follow you.

3.Customize your background, there are many free sites that help you do this. To name a few free ones you can use  Twitter Backgrounds, Twitbacks, and Twitter Gallery.

4. For me this was to download Tweetdeck. I know have over 1,300 followers and I follow just as many. How do I organize them. In Tweetdeck I have lists. RLF( my real life buds), Mommy Bloggers, Social Media, Frugal, Superstars, and now Halifax Chicks.

5. Tweet! and not just what you are eating or where you are at, mix it up, share a link (make sure you shorten it using one of the great shortening tools, if you are using Tweetdeck this is automatic), pass on useful info, most importantly be you.

Now what is with the important lingo and what does it mean for you and for me.

Tweeps- are people who use Twitter me and you

Hashtags- are used to keep track do of discussions, have you ever seen a tweet with a # in it?, that signifys the want for discussion. For us Halifax chicks we use #halifaxchicks. If you want to follow a hashtag conversation you can put #(the topic) into search and then follow along. I do this on tweet deck right now. For us Halifax girls the important two right now are #halifaxchicks and #bustamove. If you want your tweet to be part of the conversation, add the hashtag.

Retweets-you will often see a RT at the begining of a tweet this means some one is passing on a tweet they thought useful. If you want to do the same. They copy and paste and put RT at the begining to give proper credit. In Tweetdeck you simply click on there avatar and then the arrow and hit send.I like to retweet. If you see RT PLZ, you are being asked if you can retweet, sometimes I do and sometimes I dont.

These are the basics that have helped Twitter work for me. There is so much more too learn. Come back on Tuesday as I have decided to post a techy Tuesday post where I will talk about Social media, and other techy topics.

Now I am off to see what works elsewhere. Most important what works for We are that Family who is celebrating there 2nd year online..I am so glad they are part of my online community.

As  I mentioned Bust a Move at the beginning of this post, if you can help women in the Maritimes get a much needed state of the art Breast Diagnostic Center my personal donation page is here and I have blogged about it here.

Works for Me: Holiday Shopping

wfmwbannerkristen1 Works for Me: Holiday ShoppingHere is my house we have just finished the first of two Muslim celebrations..The first Eid follows our month of fasting and the second one in in Novemeber. Like any holiday and we have enough of them coming up (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Hannukah etc.) we all have to shop. Now me being the frugal mom I am I often shop online. I have found some great deals by doing some comparison shopping online.

Now I wanted to introduce you to a site that I use. Offers.com offers alot of great help when trying to find a great deal. Basically u can find great coupons you can use, online discounts and some pretty good offers. I love the free offers on there too! You might want to consider it if you are going to shop online this holiday season. I know I will be and that is what is working here in this house this week. Now I am off to We are That Family to see what is working in your house.

*note: I have been paid by Offers.com to write about them. All statements made though are my own review and not bought. As I said before on this blog if I receive payment or product from a company you all would know about it.

Works for Me: Vacation Planning and Consolidation

wfmwbannerkristen1 Works for Me: Vacation Planning and ConsolidationVacation Planning? Consolidation? What do the two have in common?  What works for me?

I haven’t taken a real vacation in a long time. I am planning a huge one for next summer for me and my daughter. This really works for me.

Earlier this week I came across Credit Counseling and their vacation budgeting section. In these tough times knowing how to budget for a vacation is so important. Who really wants to rack up debt to take a few weeks away? I know I don’t. They even offer a great downloable booklet on how to plan for vacation. Actually they offer booklets on several areas that can help make us money smart, and well as information on bankruptcy and consolidation if you need it.

I am using most the ideas offered in the booklet along with my own creative touches to plan my vacation for next summer. It will be my daughter’s first trip back to the USA since I brought her to Canada some 10 years ago. Part of my vacation plans is a trip to BlogHer 10 . I am looking forward to a vacation and know what I’m really looking forward to, being able to do it debt free!

In the months ahead I will share the story of what is working for me as I get ready. Planning is one of the important keys. Now I am off to see what works for everyone else this Wednesday at We are THAT family.

*Just to let you all know this is a paid post, I will always let you know if I have recieved a product or cash for a post. I will  always give my honest opinion as well.

Works for Me: Using Social Media in Ways that Matter

wfmwbannerkristen3 Works for Me: Using Social Media in Ways that MatterFor people that know me, they know I love all things media. The more social the better after all I am the social butterfly.

Now when it comes to using Social Media, I will admit I am just learning. After all if I was great at it, my little blog would have thousands of hits a day from people all looking for ways to save.

For me though using Social Media is not just about how to get your brand out there. It is not about how you can make more money, get more hits to your blog, etc, although those things are good and useful in their own right. For me Social Media is about connection and action.

I love the land that is blogs. Bloggerville as I like to call it has so many people that you could connect too and learn from but what I really love is when those connections are used for a greater good. I love when I stop by a blog and the writer not only has a story or a cool take on an issue but they are giving back to the great community. It makes my heart sing. That is what I want my blog to be.

How can you and I use Social Media on a daily basis in ways that matter?

For bloggers-

Write about things that matter! Help people, give them tools that will help them do better, be better, or simply smile. If you are blogging about charity events leave links so people can donate. One thing I love about Bloggerville people are generous not only with words but action.

For Facebookers-

Visit with those on your list of friends, communicate regularly, build the the relationships you have. I know I smile every time I login and their is a message or wall post for me. These little things make my day. Share great links with your list, they will appreciate it.

For Twitters-

I have Twitter to be great for so many things. From sharing a link that will make someone smile to raising thousands of dollars in a hr for a charity. Be generous in your use of the 140 characters. Encourage other, use reply and RT often. Build up your followers, and encourage them. Follow back, it is polite. If you are particpating n an event use the hashtag for it.

For me these are the 3 that I use most. Now i know there is Stumbling, digging, and the like and these are a great way to share as well. My philosophy when using Social Media : Kindness and generosity are your keys to a happier, fruitful day and think you and I will of used our day in a way that will matter to someone else.

If you enjoyed this post, please do leave me a comment I would love to hear back from you. You can also always subscribe to my feed.

I am now off to read what is working for others!

What Works for Me: Computer Clean Up

wfmwbannerkristen2 What Works for Me: Computer Clean UpI work for one of the largest Internet Service Providers in North America offering technical assistance to customers who are having connection issues.

Most of my calls are really not connection issues at all but simply people needing to learn how to care for their computers. Most people don’t think of it the way I do. I think of my computer like I would a car. It helps me get place where I want to go, and since it is a machine it is going to need regular tuneups and cleaning.

How do you clean a computer, what is important? Well these are three things I reccomend you know how to do to keep your computer working in the best order it can.

1. One have installed a decent Anti Virus software. This protects you. It is like buying insurance for your car. It is a must if you are going to surf the web in my eyes. Cant afford one? Get AVG. It is a free downloadable anti virus program. It will help stop you from picking up most viruses etc that can make your system unstable.

2. Tidy up your computer on a regular basis. Learn what a cookie is and clear cookies and defrag your computer on a regualr basis. These are all things that will help your computer run faster and better. I say these are just like organizing and tidying up your home maybe something you don’t want to do but a must.

3. Physically keep your computer clean. dust it. clean it. Dont eat or drink around your keyboard. This will ensure a clean working enviroment. Dust can get in and cause your system to stop working with age. So do take care of your computer just like you would your car.

By doing these 3 little things you are taking care of what you have, and trust me you wont need to call me unless you do have a real connection issue. As well in the long run by doing these few things you will spend less and save cents.  I am now of to We are That Family to see what works for everyone else this week.
