Works for Me Wednesday: Frugal Edition

wfmwbannerkristen1 Works for Me Wednesday: Frugal EditionWe were asked this week as participants in Work for Me Wednesday to share our most frugal tip, well besides menu planning which I shared last week, the one other thing that really helps me is couponing and savings codes. For me a cent saving mom this helps me to reduce my costs, so I can use that money for more important things like savings. Over the years I have learned much about the topic. My first ever post on the topic was a Work for Me Wednesday topic on my old blog 2 years ago and you can read that here.

1.Now I wanted to further with coupons, now to let you know as a Canadian cent saving mom I really go online and I  do use these 3 websites.

These sites all have forums and the sharing of information on coupons and discounts is tremendous.

2. I also find coupons at the grocery store. Here in Nova Scotia I find lots at my local Sobeys but it is the same at almost every grocer. You will find them on the shelves. You will find them often in calendars and other booklets that are handed out or avaialbe for you to take.

3. Go online for downloadable coupons and saving coldes. This is one of the reasons I visit Frugal Shopper. Now a word of warning many retailers are now refusing to accept these because there have been cases of fraudulent usage. As well if I am purchasing online I go looking for a discount code by doing a google search.

4.You can find them in your local newspaper. About every 4-6 weeks especially you will find a insert with some great coupons. Over the years this has often included an item you can try for free.

5. I subscribe to two Canadian magazines Glow and Canadian Living. These always come with great coupons in inserts or on the pages.  Often Canadian magazines are a great place to find savings.

These are my top 5 ways to get coupons here in Canada, how do you find the best coupons?

What Works for Me: Menu Planning 101

6a00d83451c5ac69e20112791ced0428a43 What Works for Me: Menu Planning 101A while back I was basically forced into frugality as I was a mom on welfare after my daughter was diagnosed with Asperger’s and holding down a regular job became more difficult. I was desperate on how to hang on to the little money I was getting. Back then I had $150 a month to last the month for food. It was then that I became a menu planner after first really learning about planning from Laura at The Organizing Junkie. Laura may not know this but for me she was a godsend. I became a stalker of Menu Monday posts. Learning all I could from women across bloggerville.

So what does menu planning look like for me now? For me I find what works best is a weekly plan. That way I can take advantage of loss leaders, sales, and what I have plenty of in the house. For other women they may plan biweekly or even monthly. For some with really picky eaters they may just rotate meals.

On Thursday evenings we get the flyer’s ( this is also pay night for me!) so I etch out 45 minutes to plan my menu for the next week. I grab a cup of my favorite herbal tea and sit down at the kitchen table with my flyer’s, my coupon box, and my notebook and pen in hand.

First I look through the flyer’s looking for great sales that I can combine with the coupons I know I have in my box. Here in rural Nova Scotia I am pretty limited in my selection of stores and usually end up at either Sobey’s, Co-op or Walmart. I really like Walmart because they price match. When I am looking through the flyer’s the thoughts in the back of mine : is this really a good price? is this a food we eat regularly? with it pass with the picky eaters that exist in this house? Once I have my shopping list in hand in my mind and since I have a good idea of what is in stock in my kitchen, I am really ready to start planning in earnest.

I will use this weeks menu as am example. A couple weeks ago chicken was on sale so I picked up 2 larger value packs ( and divided into meal size portions before freezing), hamburger was on sale last week, and eggs are a staple here. Cheese had also been on sale. Pasta had also been on sale ( and I had a coupon). So now I know what ingredients I have. So what should they become, what recipes should I use?

I then walk over to my computer with my little list and some ideas. I pull up a file I have on my computer that links to hundreds of recipes I have bookmarked over time. I can spend about may be 10 minutes matching up ingredients to a good recipe that will fly with us picky people. Within 1 hr on Thursday evenings I have my next week planned food wise. For me a working mom this works because I can 1. Shop Friday  morning on my day off. 2. I go with a list and my coupons to grocery store thus saving money because I am not mindless shopping.3. I don’t have that last minute worry what am I going to cook for dinner.

For me a mom who looks for ways to save cents, this works and works well. What works for you? I am off to We are That Family to see what is working for you this week.

What Works for Me- No Resolutions

So many people this time of the year make resolutions and never keep them. I was numbered among them for a long time! No more!

Last January I did make 10 goals and made a map of how to get what I wanted and of the 10 goals I set I got 7 1/2 done.

What did I accomplish in 2008

  • a new job with good benefits
  • a new place to live with double the floor space
  • I did earn or win over $300 in free stuff
  • I read 8 good books
  • I started getting dental work done
  • I did enter lots of contests
  • I did pray every day

How is that for goal setting?  What didn’t I achieve? I didn’t give up diet coke and I didn’t lose the weight I wanted off. What goals am I setting of 09? Check back tomorrow and I will tell you about them.

Right now I am off to one of my favorite blogs to see what one of my fav writers says! Can we say yeah to the end of this year please!  What not visit Rocks in My Dryer with me this year?

What Works for Me Wedesday: Valentine’s Day For the Frugal Parent

Yesterday over at The Lucky Cannuck I wrote about Valentine’s day and being lucky in love even though I am a solo parent. Today for me a cheap frugal parent there are lots of ways to make tomorrow special for my daughter and me….I think this year I spent $5 for the day.

1. First shhh..but she will wake up to her favorite breakfast of waffles and at her spot in the table she will find a wee present from mom —I used a left over clay pot, filled it with jelly beans and heart shaped lollipops both bought at the dollar store..it looks like a plant! Also from the dollar store was the cutes lil heart purse so she is getting that too. I made her card.

2.For dinner we will actually be doing something different then I had planned on the menu. We are having one of OUR fav meals —Lasagna.

3. To take care of me and show me some love–after she goes to bed well it is ME time..a nice bubble bath, and a good read are in store.

There are lots of ways to celebrate the day and be frugal at the same time and include the kids. One of the themes we are doing all month so we can really see the love in this house is to document it on our LOVE WALL. When we catch each other being loving and kind we cut out a read heart and write a note sharing what we saw..we then put this up on our love wall( we have one wall dedicated to hearts).

So how are you celebrating tomorrow? Don’t forget that ecards are a great way to show lots of people a little love!  Now off to Dont Try This At Home to see what is working for everyone else today.

What Works for Me: Volunteering

Yesterday I spent several hours doing something I love to do and that is volunteer. It started out in the morning with me at my local food bank.I was there because right now they have a special project. For those of you who are in Toronto, you may remember a building collapsed on the Danforth a few weeks ago leaving 24 homeless. Well most are still homeless and are in one of the city’s shelters. I was sorting and helping one of the families that stopped by pick out a few things that they so need. For all the families the Need is great, especially for housing in East York where all want to live again. If you have towels, bedding, clothing furniture or the like and want to donate it, email me and I will let you know where you can drop it off. It fills my spirit to have chance to give what I can and for me that is time.

Last night I was again out volunteering my time at my daughter’s school where I am vice chair of the council and we met to discuss matters that needed discussion for about 2 hours.

I spend about 75 hours a month doing work for and on the behalf of others and serving in my community because I believe if we give our time we can make this world a wee bit better place. For me volunteering helps not only others but me. It helps me as a mom who isnt out in the work world right now feel like I am contributing to the betterment of my community. It helps my spirit. It works for me..If you aren’t sure about volunteering-try it, you may find you get more out of it then you give..There are many groups that always need volunteers: food-banks, soup kitchens, senior centers, Meals to Wheels, etc..the list is long and they would be glad to have your time and service.

Well I am off to my friend Shannon’s to find out what is working for others this week.

Works for Me Wednesday Part 2-Fix It!

Shannon wanted us to post this week what we FIX it a hurry for dinner. You know those days when you are too tired to follow that menu you planned on Monday..well since I try real hard to stick to the menu so I can stay on budget..I wasn’t sure what to put but there are days when I do change things up….so what does this cheap mom do?

Okay once a week in my house is breakfast for dinner anyways so often I will swap days with another, if I have already does breakfast for dinner. Then it is leftovers, and if that don’t work then I use : grilled cheese and soup, which is also a standard cheap and healthy meal in this house.

So there now go and if you are a Cannuck read Part 1 of what really is working for this frugal mom.

Works for Me Wednesday

It’s another Wednesday so what has been working for me lately around here? We all know I love a great deal, games and contests right. Well there are two Canadian websites that I want to recommend and no I am not getting referrals, these are sites I use and know by experience do what they say!

First is Pigsback, it is new on the Market, but what a great find it was. You collect points for not only shopping online from major retailers we all know and love but by entering contests too! Guess which I do more of? There redeemable awards are great too ie you can get a Gift certificate without having to have a zillion points. They mail them out too within the time frame given.

The second is for Chapman’s Icecream Kid’s Club. It too has a point system where you play games and can earn rewards. My nine year old daughter loves it and has gotten stickers, activity book, pens, beach ball, and calculator in the mail all in great condition!

These two sites help this mom be a frugal Cannuck while doing what I love..saving money, and having fun! So they both work big time for me.

PS. If you want (or actually let me) refer you to Pigsback, then yes I can get referral points, and they have a contest the person with the most referrals in a week gets $10,000 points and that is 4 $25 gift certificates! Leave a comment and I will email you within 12 hours.

Now head over to Shannon’s for the rest of what is working for everyone!

Works for Me Wednesday

Another of the news stories that got me yesterday was one about going green…we are all trying to do our part right? Now do you purchase green products? This is the part 2 of yesterday, and since it is Works for me Wednesday let me tell you what works for me in regards to this news story.

First the story was this. Ninety nine percent of all GREEN products that are on are shelves have some sot of falsehood or misleader attached….99% what a figure right?

How do they lie? Lets use paper products produced in a sustainable forest, yes the forest was sustainable but the milling practices were very bad for the environment so they forget to mention the trade off. Others lie about what they can do..Others are a good thing put are packaged in stuff that are bad for the environment. So what are we as good consumers and people want to do leave a lesser carbon footprint? Well here is what works for this cheap environment friendly mom:

  • We get meatless twice a week or more…this is not only good for the environment but good for our health and our pocketbooks.
  • We use CFS light-bulbs…..again helping the environment and my pocketbook.
  • I clean with natural products alot that I can make myself no need to buy green here when I can make it at home
  • We recycle and use freecycle as much as we can, this includes shopping at second hand stores..( again I am being a good cheap mom)
  • I walk everywhere I can get to within 30 minutes otherwise I take the TTC.( again good for the environment and the pocketbook). I may use a taxi about once a month.

With these things done I save money, and my environment and all without having to go near the “green” goods….so you might want to try one or two…and check out what you are buying before you do…

Now if you are looking for more Work for me Wednesday posts go over here to Shannon’s…and read..

Christmas Tip#13–Got someone on your naughty list? I really liked this idea from Organized Christmas for Snowman Poop…so get your baggies ready to pick up this yummy stuff that is a favorite of Roo’s.

This morning I am thankful that the rain has stayed away this morning as dear Roo has an outdoor field trip all day…so let it be gone till at least 4 pm.

Works for Me Wednesday

Yes it is that time of the week again, Shannon is once again hosting what works for us. Yesterday I was speaking with another cheap frugal mom and we  talking about getting the most for our money and the talk turned to coupons and cutting costs where we can so today I wanted to share what has been working for me as I try to cut costs and coupon or grab great deals where and when I can. I have a few sites bookmarked that I go to all the time for the purposes of couponing and finding great deals.

1. Save.ca is a great site that you can keep going back too! Try it once and you will be hooked. I go on it about once a month and get my coupons from there.

2.Frugal Shopperis another great site with a great forum attached. I go to this site every day. I have traded coupons and even been gifted coupons I am looking for. It really is a great friendly place of like minded frugalites.

3. All  Good Coupons.canot only is categories but lists contact info for more coupon collecting. I have emailed and joined lists of companies that I frequent and coupons do show up in my email and mailbox. By the way they even have some American stuff for you girls south of the border.

4. Red FlagDeals..I check out when I am looking for a great deal, frugal shopper also has an area for this but it is always good to have several sources.

I rely on these 4 sites on a regular basis and then for the rest of my coupon needs I buy the Saturday paper when the Smart Shopper is in it and I watch the aisles of the grocery store and grab coupons that I see. I do take coupons I know I wont use too, why? Because I can trade them or gift them to someone who will! So this is what works for me in my attempt to make my dollar stretch further. In the last 3 months I have been able to cut my grocery bill by 25% by doing my best at coupon collecting.
