Backpack Fillers with Flipp – Back to School Deals

There are only about 3 weeks left before school starts and many parents will be scrambling to fill their children’s list for Back to School.  This is the time to head out and pick up the backpack fillers before they are gone. At this time of the year, those items we need the most, or those super heroes and Princess backpacks seem to go pretty quickly.

Backpack Fillers – School Supplies

First, a backpack will be needed for this task. Finding the right backpack isn’t always about finding the cheapest. If the one from last year is still in good condition, consider washing it up and continue using it. Kid’s can be picky and will want a certain character or colour, they have their minds set on a particular one. This week the choices are endless and prices are starting as low as $4.99 at a few stores.

Staples Valid August 9 – August 15, 2017

Getting the Dorm Kitchen Ready with Canadian Tire #CTBacktoSchool

o It’s hard to believe a chapter has closed and a new one will begin very soon. My daughter is at college and she is moving into the dorm. Last year we discovered the commute was a bit long. Sometimes it was 2 hours each way.  Who wants that at the end of a day of studying and thanks to scholarship dollars she will be able to afford it. So as we looked at meal plans and her dorm, and we decided to go with a lite dining plan that will have her cooking lots of her meals. Thank goodness my teen loves to cook!

Her dorm room is a single and she will have one roommate in their apartment. They also have a kitchenette that the two of them share and a larger kitchen on the floor. This means for her to cook some of her meals and store her kitchen gear, we need to get organized. Now thanks to our friends at Canadian tire we well on our way to having her kitchen set up.

Since my teen is sharing a kitchenette for lots of her cooking as do many roommates, it is always important to check with your roomie so you can make a list of what you need to get.

So what are some essentials all students should have to have the perfect dorm kitchen?

A Kitchen Cart

We love the For Living Microwave cart. It’s perfect for this compact spaces while giving you lots of storage space. My teen is using the top shelf for dish and mug storage and the middle shelf will be her coffee station. Every student needs a coffee station, after all, who wants to be stopping at the coffee shops every day? Not my teen. My teen was able to put it together in just a couple of hours on her own.

A Coffee Maker and Coffee Bean Grinder

Want to keep your teen from spending all their spare cash at the local coffee shop? Invest in a coffee maker and grinder. It gives the air of a treat without the expense. Having a quick and easy access to coffee will keep her and her roomie fueled for those late nights of studying.

Cutting Board and Knives

To prep your meals at college you will want a good cutting boards and knives. We are liking the Stainless steel Santoku Knife with cutting board. It is available as a 4 pc set.

Bakeware

My teen loves to bake. I can see her baking treats even while she is at college. We found a silicone bakeware set that is perfect for college life.  We love it because it is microwave-, oven-, refrigerator- and dishwasher-safe. How is that for being super useful! I see banana bread, muffins and cakes in her future.

Cookware

I can remember my dad buying me my first good set of pots and pans. He did the same for my sister as well. He was a big one in investing in a good set of pots of pans and this is where you prepare your meals. Sometimes you spend a bit more for things that will last long after college. We are loving her new  Master Chef® Stainless Steel Cook Set. It offers you everything you need to successfully prepare a variety of your favorite dishes. The stainless steel material does not interfere with food flavors, is durable and distributes heat evenly for optimal cooking results. The clear lids let you monitor the cooking process of each dish while sealing in heat and flavor.

My teen could not wait to use hers. She took it for a test spin last night and made a meal most college kids will eat several times a semester, ramen! Next week her and I will be sharing some simple back to school college meal options.

With all of this, you will want to make sure you add a few mugs, some dishes, dish towels, a large bowl, cutlery, a can opener and some Rubbermaid. All of which can be found at Canadian Tire.

Let me know if you have a college kid starting their dorm kitchen adventures and be sure to enter the Back to School With Canadian Tire Contest!

5 Must-Haves for Back to School Tech from Best Buy

This month has been one of those months. My teen is not hard on tech but this month both her cellphone and her laptop died. Yes, it was one of those months. We all have them, which made shopping for tech mandatory this fall. I think my teen and I have been in Best Buy more than twice this week and will be back there today for the VIP sale. There are some great deals today!

So what are the five must-haves according to my teen?

chromebook

She loves the  Acer 11.6 Chromebook. At $189.00 during today’s sale, it is a steal! After sale price is $249. For us this was affordable. This Chromebook will make it easy for my teen to get her school work done here at home, at school or on the go. She loves that it is small and light weight.  Perfect for the high school student on the go.

pen

The IRISPen Executive Pen scanner is available online only on BestBuy.ca, but it allows you to scan your favourite book quotes, newspaper headlines, and more with the IRISPen Executive 7 text recognition pen scanner. Simply slide this digital pen over printed material to scan the information directly to your computer screen. It recognizes over 130 languages and can even translate the scanned text into 55 languages. Think of all the time saved.

skullcandy

My teen has fallen in love with her Skullcandy Ink’d In Ear Wireless Headphones. She received them last week when I brought home a swag bag from the Life and Tech Show here in Toronto. She loves how light they are and tells me the sound quality is incredible.

10450255

Every piece of digital equipment needs a great backpack. We have loved the Jansport brand for years, so our pick is the Jansport Digitial Student 38 L Laptop School backpack. As a mom I love how durable these backpacks are! This one is perfect for students who carry electronics and even has a side water bottle pocket so you can stay hydrated in a hurry.

tracker

Ever have kids lose something expensive like their phone, laptop or other device? The TrackR Bravo Bluetooth Tracker-3 Pack makes misplacing items a thing of the past. Attach the coin-sized TrackR bravo to any item, then use the TrackR app to locate it in seconds. Quickly ring a missing item around the home or press the button on the TrackR to ring your phone on silent mode.

These are our five favourite pieces of Tech this fall. Do you have any favourites, let me know?

Back to School with Hallmark #LoveHallmarkCA

In the hustle that is back to school sometimes it is so nice to have a box of must haves arrive at your door. My teen and I have been trying to take in the last few days of summer while juggling getting ready for back to school.  Sometimes I miss the days of simple shopping lists. My daughter’s list changes daily it seems after all she is a teen.

Supplies for high school depend on the classes they will take. This year my daughter was even told to bring a device with her. My teen will be filling each semester with 4 high school courses and one college. She will split her time between her local high school and George Brown College. This week we have been seeing what we have on hand and then heading shopping. She still needs some of the basics and a new laptop.

Hallmark Back to school

Thanks to my friends at Hallmark Canada some of the things she needs can be scratched off the list. They sent a box filled with great items for the back to school teen. She loved picking out a calendar, and yes I will use the other one. For her, she was happy to see journals and notebooks. She said these are perfect for taking quick notes and making lists. The folders will be used to keep class work organized.

As someone who loves Hallmark, I am thankful she is going off to her new school with items of great quality. She feel in love with the cute fun socks that were also included. They also included adorable Peanuts glassware. The teen loved that her favourite character Linus was on one of the glasses, the other had Charlie Brown.  So fun. The past couple of weeks she has been using her Linus glass exclusively.  The other item included was a sweet glass dish perfect for those end of the day pocket dumps.

Check out everything they have  at Hallmark.ca to help yours be more organized this year. Let me know are you almost ready for back to school?

Tips to Deal with the Back to School Drawbacks

Can you believe it? Summer vacation for the kids is almost done. The freedom and fun of summer will soon be over, and it is time for back to school. With the lazy of summer behind us, there are a few “drawbacks” to getting back into the school routine.

C&D_Aug_BTS

Laundry: Summer comes with its fair share of stains, but soon gym clothes and uniforms will take over – big time. If your kids wear a uniform to school, you know the importance of keeping these in good condition. There’s nothing worse than having to replace something mid-year. Then there are the extra-curricular activities…hello, hockey jerseys and ballet leotards! These items are pricey, and it’s important to care for them properly. What are the odds these items will make it through the school year? Step 1: beg and plead with your kids to treat these items with care (good luck!). Step 2: Equip yourself with a killer laundry arsenal that’s always at your fingertips. For example, stock up on OxiClean™ Colour Shield Liquid Laundry Stain Remover, it keeps colours looking their brightest. And OxiClean™ White Revive™ Stain Remover Powder has your whites covered as it’s specially formulated to maintain whites – without chlorine bleach! For inevitable stains, turn to OxiClean™ Laundry Stain Remover Spray and OxiClean™ Max Force™ Gel Stick to pre-treat in advance of your next laundry day.

Aches and pains: Real life will ramp up again quickly for you too. Whether you’re back at the office and adjusting to sitting at a desk all day or you’re just trying to keep up with your kids, topical pain relievers such as RUB·A535™ Extra Strength Heating Cream are essential to have on hand for those muscle aches and pains. It delivers fast-acting, warm, penetrating relief of muscle, joint, back and arthritic pain.

Cavities: Before you know it, Halloween will be approaching and then the Holidays are not far behind. For you, this means an extra-long to-do list. For your kids, it’s the start of a regular diet of candy and chocolate so brushing their teeth will be key! When brushing is fun, your kids will want to brush their teeth! They’ll love the novelty of the moving brush head on Arm & Hammer™ Spinbrush™ Kids Battery Toothbrush and designs such as My Little Pony™ and Paw Patrol™ will get them even more excited.

When we think about it some more, heading back to school isn’t so bad! That being said, what are you not looking forward to the most? I bet I have a tip to help!

Back to School Tips from Some of Canada’s Mom Bloggers

back to school tips

It is that time of year, back to school is around the corner. Parents are making lists checking them twice and asking friends for advice.  Since I live in the digital world, yesterday I asked several of the bloggers I know for their best back to school tips. They were happy to share them with me. I wanted to give you my readers some great tips. My friends did not disappoint.

Here are some back to school tips from some of Canada’s best mom bloggers:

From Ruth Ann Swansburg

Buy a good quality Plain (no characters) Back Pack. Accessorize with key chain, zipper pull or other “favourite character” or theme accessories. This will allow use of the bag for multiple years, and no need to worry about the trends or characters your child is wanting each year.

She blogs at www.everythingunscripted.com

From Bonnie Guy

Put Mabel’s Labels on EVERYTHING!!! They stay on most surfaces and help you prevent lost or stolen items at school.( Labels helped me save so much cash when my daughter was younger.)

She blogs at www.unrestrainedlaughter.com

From Becky Stanisic

Shop your own home first! Take stock of what lunch items you already have, hand me downs from one kid to another, and rulers/supplies that are still in good shape!

She blogs at www.bitofmomsense.com

back to school

From Aneta Alaei

Do not buy something just because it is on sale. If you can’t use it its not a sale but a waste of money

She blogs at http://www.homewithaneta.com/

From Diane Morgan

Always to make sure whatever lunch containers you provide can be opened by your children.

She blogs at http://stufftodowithyourkidsinkw.blogspot.com

From Lori Anne

Shop off season (for next year!) We shopped for back to school clothes at 70% off by shopping the clearance section and combining promotion and sales codes. Get on the email list for your favourite clothing stores for the kids, and shop early. I label what’s in the boxes, and put them away at the top of closets, so they don’t get worn until school starts, but I can still keep track.

She blogs at  www.raisingedmonton.com

From Fariha Naqvi

Take stock of what you have at home, then buy accordingly. Erasers can be reused, pencil cases (if dirty) can be washed. Use Flipp to price match and ensure you get the best price. Also, stock up if you get a deal.

She blogs at http://www.canadianmomeh.com/

From Sherrie Guthrie

Make a list of all of the things needed, and a separate list of wants. Also remember to see what your school policies and procedures are in regards to BTS supplies. Most public schools have suggested lists of supplies, but nothing is required in most cases. As well, shop NOW, not at the last minute for shoes. Most shops have a limited number of shoe sizes in each style. My last suggestion, use coupons and web deals to help save more money.

She blogs at www.goodkarmababy.ca

From Andrea Tomkins

My kids are older now, so we give them a lump sum, and it has to really stretch! They use this money to buy school supplies AND clothing (although we buy their footwear). It forces them to reuse last year’s school supplies, reduce purchases, and find the best deals.

She blogs at http://quietfish.com/

From Anne Marie Brown

Usually, the first week of school still has nice weather and kids often are still wearing summer clothes. Wait until the fall sales to buy up the wardrobe items needed for that season when it comes to clothing.

She blogs at www.itsjustmylife.ca

If all else fails, be sure after a long day of shopping grab a glass of wine and put your feet up. Let me know your best tips in the comments and I will be sure to share some of them on my facebook page.

Back to School With Skechers (Giveaway)

sckechersI know that we are right in the midst of summer, but in less than a month the kids will be headed back to school. As both my teen and I will be taking courses this fall, we are both starting to get in the mind space where we think about what we need. This fall we are lucky we will be heading back to school with Skechers on our feet.

I am hard to fit when it comes to shoes. I have a wide foot. I was delighted last fall when I found the most comfortable pair of Skechers last fall. I have worn them almost every day for months. They are a spend that is worth the money. Sometimes it is okay to spend money on things that do matter like your feet. If you are travelling back and forth to school or even work, you want to be comfortable.

IMG_20160811_111057

Last month, we went to Skechers.com and checked out all the great footwear options. My teen is very picky, but she oohed and awed over the selection in front of her. I did the same. As I said, I have a wider foot, so the first thing I checked was the selection. They have over 50 pairs of shoes that will fit a wider foot. How cool is that! For me, that was a huge plus! It gave me lots of options.

IMG_20160811_111338

I settled on a great pair of SKECHERS Relaxed Fit®: Bikers –  it is a Cruisin shoe. I love that it gives me a casual professional look and has that great memory foam insole. If your shoes do not have a memory foam insole, trust me it is something you want to try! It helps that they just look great as well!

IMG_20160811_111354

My teen decided she wanted the navy/pink Skechers GO STEPs. These shoes will be great for her as they feature Goga Mat Technology and Goga Pillars on the midsole and outsole which means she gets the correct arch support and shock absorption. With these shoes as well my daughter who loves to go sockless can! These shoes also feature the Integrated Ortholite® anti-microbial sock liner which helps inhibit odor and prevent slippage. These shoes are also very lightweight which my teen loves. I can see her wearing them all year.

Now here is some great news for my readers: You can win two pairs of Skechers just in time for back to school.

All  you have to do is leave a comment and let me know which shoes you would pick for those going back to school in your house.

You can check out the selection of shoes on their website.

*this giveaway closes August 31st, 2016 at 12 pm and is open to Canadian residents only.

*you can earn an extra entry by sharing this giveaway, just leave me a link to where you shared in the comments.

5 Ways to Win During Back to School Shopping

5 Ways to Win During Back to School Shopping

5 Ways to Win During Bacl To School Shopping

I was at Walmart Canada last week, and it was great to see all the back to school supplies are out. Even though our summer vacation technically began on Thursday of last week, I am already thinking about ways to save next year. Why did our summer vacation start so late this year? My teen decided to take a summer school course. While walking the aisles, I realized we all could save during the back to school rush, not just parents who are sending their kids back to school.

So how can we all save?

1.  Shop The Summer Sales Racks

Here in Canada, in the fall and winter layering is a big thing. Shop the summer racks for the light clothing you can layer. Everyone else is thinking of what’s new but now is a great time to get some layering pieces.

2.  Get Your Office Supplies Now

If you work from home like I do, now is a great time to stock up on much-needed supplies. Need paper for your printer, pens, labels, and other office essentials? This is the time to hit places like Walmart, Staples, and the other major retailers. Grab those loss leaders ( the deeply discounted items that are meant to get you in the door).

3. Use Your Loyalty Cards

While you are out stocking up, collect your points or if you shop online use a site like Ebates ( a great portal site that gives you cash back). As well if you pay using a credit card that gives you points or cash back you can double dip as they say. Just remember to pay that credit card bill in full at the end of the month. After all who loves interest?

4. Win with Social Media

Do you follow your favorite retailers and brands on social media? You should. Your favorite retailers may just have special offers for their fans. They often do have back to school giveaways that you may want to enter after all there is nothing better than winning something you had planned on paying for.

5. Remember to Price Match

Anyone who reads my blog knows I love to price match. Just letting you know Staples price matches. I don’t often write about it here on my blog but during back to school it is important to remember. Check out your local flyers on the Flipp app. Many retailers are now allowing you to price match straight from your phone.

These are all simple ways you can save and win during the back to school season even if you are not a parent. Tell me do you have any saving strategies that you use to win during back to school season?

A Back to School Essential: the Backpack

Its that time of the year here, parents are quickly out buying last minute school supplies. For me the most important item on the list this year is my teen’s backpack. It has to be durable and for the first time I want it to have wheels. So we went shopping, we started in late July checking out the stores to see what they had. Where did we end up? At Eaton Center, at Bentley.

Bentley-Back-to-school-Essentials-

Why Bentley for backpacks? With over 200 different backpacks on their website I knew they would have options. They have a huge selection of backpacks for every age group, and not only backpacks but lunch bags and pencil cases as well.

What kind of backpack does your child need?

Having worked in daycare and after school programs for many years, this is the first year we are going with the rolled backpack.

For little ones:

Get them smaller back packs, also have a small bag they leave at school with a change of clothes.  They are not carrying as much back and forth. What I would invest in is a few lunchbags as they always seem to disappear, don’t ask how they just do.

For elementary kids I prefer a solid back pack that fits well. They are bringing home homework, projects and more. I don’t recommend the wheels because here in Canada, well we have long winters and dragging a backpack on wheels over ice in the school yard is a pain.

For my high schooler kids like mine who are doing both high school and college at the same time this is the time to think about wheels and brand names, thankfully, Bentley carries some great names like Jansport, Swiss Gear, Adidas and Reebok.

As well for university kids, laptop sleeves and pencil cases for storing on the tech gear they need on a daily basis. Now Bentley does have some great back to school deals so be sure to check those out as well.

swiss gear backpack with wheels

So what did my teen get? A Swiss Gear backpack..lots of room as she heads to grade 12 and George Brown this year. Yes, she is doing a dual credit program.

Let me know, how much energy goes into finding the perfect backpack for your kids?

Time for Back to Campus #StudentLife with a Contest and a Twitter Party!

I remember well getting ready for university my first year, I lived at home while I explored a new city, Halifax and attended Dalhousie University. By the time I hit second year however it was time for me to spread my wings and I was on my way to the University of Manitoba. While there I lived in a small apartment off campus and in the dorm. As I prepared for each year and each location there was always shopping that had to be done, as well as forging through friends and family to get what I needed.

I can remember well trying to make a strict budget, some of the favorite things I bought we my comfy duvet comforter that I got a deal on, my kettle for making tea and hot chocolate and milk crates they stored plenty of my items while I was in university.

As my daughter Rachel starts both college and her last year of high school this year she will be living at home but we are giving her bedroom a bit of a makeover and she will be doing so much studying well she will need the space.

Now many of my friends kids are getting ready for their first apartments and dorm rooms. I can remember it was a chore to get everything I needed for a small working kitchen. Think about it, what essentials would you put in the perfect student kitchen?

My friends at Canadian Tire have put together a pretty good list of the essentials for a great student kitchen:
