o It’s hard to believe a chapter has closed and a new one will begin very soon. My daughter is at college and she is moving into the dorm. Last year we discovered the commute was a bit long. Sometimes it was 2 hours each way. Who wants that at the end of a day of studying and thanks to scholarship dollars she will be able to afford it. So as we looked at meal plans and her dorm, and we decided to go with a lite dining plan that will have her cooking lots of her meals. Thank goodness my teen loves to cook!
Her dorm room is a single and she will have one roommate in their apartment. They also have a kitchenette that the two of them share and a larger kitchen on the floor. This means for her to cook some of her meals and store her kitchen gear, we need to get organized. Now thanks to our friends at Canadian tire we well on our way to having her kitchen set up.
Since my teen is sharing a kitchenette for lots of her cooking as do many roommates, it is always important to check with your roomie so you can make a list of what you need to get.
So what are some essentials all students should have to have the perfect dorm kitchen?
A Kitchen Cart
We love the For Living Microwave cart. It’s perfect for this compact spaces while giving you lots of storage space. My teen is using the top shelf for dish and mug storage and the middle shelf will be her coffee station. Every student needs a coffee station, after all, who wants to be stopping at the coffee shops every day? Not my teen. My teen was able to put it together in just a couple of hours on her own.
A Coffee Maker and Coffee Bean Grinder
Want to keep your teen from spending all their spare cash at the local coffee shop? Invest in a coffee maker and grinder. It gives the air of a treat without the expense. Having a quick and easy access to coffee will keep her and her roomie fueled for those late nights of studying.
Cutting Board and Knives
To prep your meals at college you will want a good cutting boards and knives. We are liking the Stainless steel Santoku Knife with cutting board. It is available as a 4 pc set.
My teen loves to bake. I can see her baking treats even while she is at college. We found a silicone bakeware set that is perfect for college life. We love it because it is microwave-, oven-, refrigerator- and dishwasher-safe. How is that for being super useful! I see banana bread, muffins and cakes in her future.
I can remember my dad buying me my first good set of pots and pans. He did the same for my sister as well. He was a big one in investing in a good set of pots of pans and this is where you prepare your meals. Sometimes you spend a bit more for things that will last long after college. We are loving her new Master Chef® Stainless Steel Cook Set. It offers you everything you need to successfully prepare a variety of your favorite dishes. The stainless steel material does not interfere with food flavors, is durable and distributes heat evenly for optimal cooking results. The clear lids let you monitor the cooking process of each dish while sealing in heat and flavor.
My teen could not wait to use hers. She took it for a test spin last night and made a meal most college kids will eat several times a semester, ramen! Next week her and I will be sharing some simple back to school college meal options.
With all of this, you will want to make sure you add a few mugs, some dishes, dish towels, a large bowl, cutlery, a can opener and some Rubbermaid. All of which can be found at Canadian Tire.
Let me know if you have a college kid starting their dorm kitchen adventures and be sure to enter the Back to School With Canadian Tire Contest!
