Getting the Dorm Kitchen Ready with Canadian Tire #CTBacktoSchool

o It’s hard to believe a chapter has closed and a new one will begin very soon. My daughter is at college and she is moving into the dorm. Last year we discovered the commute was a bit long. Sometimes it was 2 hours each way.  Who wants that at the end of a day of studying and thanks to scholarship dollars she will be able to afford it. So as we looked at meal plans and her dorm, and we decided to go with a lite dining plan that will have her cooking lots of her meals. Thank goodness my teen loves to cook!

Her dorm room is a single and she will have one roommate in their apartment. They also have a kitchenette that the two of them share and a larger kitchen on the floor. This means for her to cook some of her meals and store her kitchen gear, we need to get organized. Now thanks to our friends at Canadian tire we well on our way to having her kitchen set up.

Since my teen is sharing a kitchenette for lots of her cooking as do many roommates, it is always important to check with your roomie so you can make a list of what you need to get.

So what are some essentials all students should have to have the perfect dorm kitchen?

A Kitchen Cart

We love the For Living Microwave cart. It’s perfect for this compact spaces while giving you lots of storage space. My teen is using the top shelf for dish and mug storage and the middle shelf will be her coffee station. Every student needs a coffee station, after all, who wants to be stopping at the coffee shops every day? Not my teen. My teen was able to put it together in just a couple of hours on her own.

A Coffee Maker and Coffee Bean Grinder

Want to keep your teen from spending all their spare cash at the local coffee shop? Invest in a coffee maker and grinder. It gives the air of a treat without the expense. Having a quick and easy access to coffee will keep her and her roomie fueled for those late nights of studying.

Cutting Board and Knives

To prep your meals at college you will want a good cutting boards and knives. We are liking the Stainless steel Santoku Knife with cutting board. It is available as a 4 pc set.

Bakeware

My teen loves to bake. I can see her baking treats even while she is at college. We found a silicone bakeware set that is perfect for college life.  We love it because it is microwave-, oven-, refrigerator- and dishwasher-safe. How is that for being super useful! I see banana bread, muffins and cakes in her future.

Cookware

I can remember my dad buying me my first good set of pots and pans. He did the same for my sister as well. He was a big one in investing in a good set of pots of pans and this is where you prepare your meals. Sometimes you spend a bit more for things that will last long after college. We are loving her new  Master Chef® Stainless Steel Cook Set. It offers you everything you need to successfully prepare a variety of your favorite dishes. The stainless steel material does not interfere with food flavors, is durable and distributes heat evenly for optimal cooking results. The clear lids let you monitor the cooking process of each dish while sealing in heat and flavor.

My teen could not wait to use hers. She took it for a test spin last night and made a meal most college kids will eat several times a semester, ramen! Next week her and I will be sharing some simple back to school college meal options.

With all of this, you will want to make sure you add a few mugs, some dishes, dish towels, a large bowl, cutlery, a can opener and some Rubbermaid. All of which can be found at Canadian Tire.

Let me know if you have a college kid starting their dorm kitchen adventures and be sure to enter the Back to School With Canadian Tire Contest!

It snowed today here in Toronto, which reminded me if I was still living in rural Nova Scotia like I used too I would be getting my car ready for winter.  When I lived outside of Truro, I was twenty minutes from town and worked at the local mall so my car had to be in great shape all the time. I learned with that car how important winter prep was! I even took an auto care course so I could take care of some of the basics myself.  I also learned to count on my local Canadian Tire store for whatever we needed when it came to getting my car winter ready.

When it comes to car care and getting a vehicle ready for winter I encourage a visit to Canadian Tire, they have everything you will need. As I type this a good friend is getting his car ready for winter. It is at the garage getting the winter tires put on. Oils and fluids will be checked and winter wiper blades will be put on the car.  Safety and visibility are two things you want all winter long!

Have you ever wanted to get in the car without brushing off all that snow? One of the things I know after driving those mountain roads is it is so important to have a car emergency kit, to have a great snow brush  and always have your fluids topped up.  You can get all of those looked after at Canadian Tire.

Another thing I relied on were my winter tires. They saved me more than once on black ice. There were many late nights on the mountain that I was very thankful for my snow tires. Do you have all seasonal tires or do you switch your tires? Even living here in the city, snow tires come in handy. Did you know that Canadian Tire even has a price match guarantee on tires, with that you will also get an additional 10% of the lower price in Canadian Tire Money?

The other thing about winter that I used to hate, how long it would take to get the car warm. These days you can even remotely start your car so it is nice and toasty before you even have to take a seat.

Check out Canadian Tire Automotive  to see all the ways you can prep your car for winter or perhaps you want to winterize your own ride, they can help you do that as well.

Also, play for a chance to win $50,000 with Reflex Ice.  There are over 1000 instant prizes and a $10,000 travel voucher to be won.

Getting Her College Room Ready with Canadian Tire

This summer has flown by. It seems like yesterday my daughter was finishing up her high school career. This year she is doing a Gap year. Have you ever had one of yours take one? She will be splitting her time between high school and college. Back to school is just over a week away.  She needs a few more science courses to take the college program she is most interested in. She will be taking those and at the same time taking a digital animation course at George Brown. She has a busy year ahead. To get her ready, we are giving her room a makeover and getting her college ready. Think of it like a dorm room at home.

She has had most of the current stuff in her room since we got here six years ago. Most of what we got back then were hand me downs or items I picked up second hand. She deserves and needs an upgrade. She is an eighteen-year-old young woman who needs a space to do the things she loves. She also needs to be organized because for the first time she will have actual homework.  How did she get through high school with no homework? She did it all at school.

We have been looking for a new desk, dresser and bookcase for her room. We have also been looking at computer chairs, lamps, and rugs. She was on the Flipp app recently and was flipping through the sales flyers when she noticed that Canadian Tire had some things that would look great in her room. She loved that she could finally have pieces that match. No more hand me downs.

Getting Her College Room Ready

My daughter fell in love with the Sauder Oak 5-Shelf Bookcase. She loved how grown up it looked. The fixed and adjustable shelves are great for her. You should see her collection of books and art supplies. This bookcase will be perfect for storing them all.

She also fell in love with the Sauder Salter oak desk. She loves the two small drawers to keep all little things in. This will give her lots of space for writing those essays and reviewing lab notes.

To complete everything she wants the Sauder Salted Oak 4-drawer dresser.  After all, what young woman doesn’t an elegant and contemporary place for all her clothes? This one will have ample storage space for her.

Her room here is small, and I can imagine her dorm room will be just as small, so she loves Arden shag rug in linen. She loves the feel of shag and doesn’t want to wake up to cold feet.

Every student needs a good lamp, and she wanted a swing arm desk lamp.  She will have enough light for those late night study sessions.

While checking out what she needs now for her new room, she was also thinking ahead to next year when she will have to buy small kitchen things like a mini fridge, microwave, toaster oven and kettle so she even checked those out and a few were placed on her Christmas list. She was excited when we found much of what she needs for her college room.

So tell me how did you have to get your teen ready for university or college? Were you shopping for the dorm room? Buying a few new things for home to help them adjust?

Time for Back to Campus #StudentLife with a Contest and a Twitter Party!

I remember well getting ready for university my first year, I lived at home while I explored a new city, Halifax and attended Dalhousie University. By the time I hit second year however it was time for me to spread my wings and I was on my way to the University of Manitoba. While there I lived in a small apartment off campus and in the dorm. As I prepared for each year and each location there was always shopping that had to be done, as well as forging through friends and family to get what I needed.

I can remember well trying to make a strict budget, some of the favorite things I bought we my comfy duvet comforter that I got a deal on, my kettle for making tea and hot chocolate and milk crates they stored plenty of my items while I was in university.

As my daughter Rachel starts both college and her last year of high school this year she will be living at home but we are giving her bedroom a bit of a makeover and she will be doing so much studying well she will need the space.

Now many of my friends kids are getting ready for their first apartments and dorm rooms. I can remember it was a chore to get everything I needed for a small working kitchen. Think about it, what essentials would you put in the perfect student kitchen?

My friends at Canadian Tire have put together a pretty good list of the essentials for a great student kitchen:
