The Best Canadian Websites & Apps that Save You Money

thebestcanadianwebsitesandapps

There are so many apps that can save Canadians money. Most of these apps fall into one or more of these 3 groups: coupon apps, flyer apps and cash back apps. For websites, many are portal sites that offer you deals, a percentage back etc. Some of the apps also have online portals so you don’t always need to use your phone.

Some of the apps do more than one thing. Some give you coupons and flyers, some cashback and flyers, but they all do one thing: save you money! I have also included store apps that give points that can be redeemed for groceries and items you may need.

How do I use these apps and websites?

1. I always shop with a list. If it is a big ticket item that means I will check sale prices  on Flipp, then I will also go online and see if I can get a deal. At Christmas time, I found some great deals online. This year about half of my Christmas shopping was done online through rebate portals meaning I received cash back. Nice to receive cash back instead of credit card bills after Christmas.

2. I buy what I need for that week and suggest you don’t stockpile. I don’t like food waste especially. Buy what you need not necessarily what’s on sale that week. I go by my menu plan for grocery shopping. Just a heads up. Sales flyers for groceries go through cycles, that item you want will most likely go on sale sometimes within a 6 to 8-week window.

3. I am not a great couponer when I have to go into a store. I will use promo codes and coupons when I shop online. I do however hunt for the best deal by comparison shopping. I always check prices.

4. I always look at the flyers and rebate apps as I meal plan. I check these early Friday mornings over tea as I create my menu plan for the following week. I tend to get up early Saturday morning to do my grocery shopping for the week.

What websites help Canadians get cashback?

1. Great Canadian Rebates

This is the oldest Canadian cash back website. It has been around since 2005. It has great payouts and has cash back from regular online retailers like Indigo and Walmart. It often has the highest % cash back so make sure you check this site first. You also get paid cash back  when those you referred earn cashback. You can receive your cash back via an Amazon gift card, paypal deposit or have a cheque mailed to you.

2. Ebates.ca

Ebates has been in the US as a major cash back player for a long time, but they have only been in Canada a short time. Ebates like Great Canadian rebates partners with online retailers in affiliate programs. They make their money when you make a purchase through their site. Make sure to check out their Daily Double that gives you double the cash back that day. The stores change each day.  They also pay for referrals. With ebates you can be paid by check, paypal or donate your cash back to charity, organization or family member.

If you shop online, I would be using one of these sites to help you save on everything from your next flight to your next book. Make sure you check these sites when looking for anything online, bet you will find it and be able to get cash back.

When I shop online I always go through one of these portal sites, just remember to go to the cashback site before you go to the online store you want to shop at to guarantee your rebate. Simply click on the retailers offer from the portal. Make sure you are logged in when you click. I forgot once over the holidays and for that purchase I did not receive cash back.

For Comparison shopping, coupons, price matching, and cash back:

I am listing these apps in order that I use them. Canadians have many options that will all help them save money. Some of these I absolutely love and adore and use multiple times a week others I use not so much.

3.Flipp (iOS, Android, desktop)

Flipp is a flyer app and so much more that has some cool features that has been saving Canadian money for 2 years now. We love its search function, shopping list and discount slider. I will let you know I fell in love with this app when it was less than a month old and I have been singing its praises ever since. It is my number one app for price matching.  They recently started offering coupons as well. Have you checked out the coupon section yet? You will have to have these delivered to your inbox and you will have to print them and take them to the store but they do give you additional savings.  New flyers come available on Thursday and Friday and there are often previews the day before.

4. Caddle (iOS, desktop)

Caddle is a brand new Canadian app that offers cash back for engagement and purchase from the brands you love. It’s a new kind of app in that you can watch short videos about products and programs, answer a quick survey ( they take less than 30 seconds) and get paid for it. Purchase that product and get additional cash back. Several of the offers are for community engagement and no in store purchase needed. New offers come available on Thursdays. 5. Checkout 51 (iOS, Android, desktop)

Checkout 51 is a cashback app. Every Thursday morning they list their new weekly offers. Check the app before you head to the store and pick the offers you want to purchase. When get home you simply take a photo of your receipt and upload it to their mobile app or website. Once you hit $20 you can cash out and they will send you a check in the mail. It really is that simple.

6.  Zweet (iOS, Android)

Zweet is another cashback app, however they also have a points program and a refer a friend program. Similar to the Checkout 51 app you would check the app, in this case new offers come out every Wednesday and run for one week unless otherwise stated in the offer details, for the deals you are interested in. When you get home you take a photo of your receipt and upload it to their mobile app. Once you hit the $20 mark they will mail you a check. Their points program also offers great rewards, for every offer you successfully redeem you get 5 Zweet points that you can put towards such items as gift cards and donations to charities. Along with all of the above this app also has a refer a friend program, the person who makes the referral gets $2 and the person who accepts the referral gets $1. You can only refer friends on your contact list.

7. CartSmart (iOS, Android, desktop

Cartsmart is a flyer app that will automatically identify if your items are on sale at nearby stores and a cashback app. Before you go to the store, check the app for your local flyer deals and make your list accordingly. They post new offers every Thursday morning and don’t forget to look at the details as some of their offers run up to two weeks. When you get home take a photo of your receipt and upload it to their mobile app. But wait, there is more. Cartsmart now has coupons you can clip and print, special offers for taking surveys and they give you the chance to engage with brands and earn great loyalty benefits including exclusive offers and special content created for you. What is a little different about this app is the payout. Like the others you can wait until you get to the $20 mark and have them mail you a check or if you have a PayPal account you can cash out at any amount by transferring your funds yourself.

8. Save.ca (iOS, Android, Desktop)

Save.ca has a lot going on. They have coupons, flyers, deals and they have an online community that shares all kinds of great articles about money savings. In their coupons section they offer deals that you can click on to either print or have mailed to you. Check often as they have new coupons coming all the time. 9. Snap by Groupon (iOS, Android, desktop)

Snap is a cashback app. It’s simple and easy just like the previous cashback apps. Once you have decided on the offers you want for that week and have purchased them, simply snap a photo of your receipt and upload it to them. They also have a refer a friend program that pays you $1 for each friend that signs up and redeems an offer. Once you achieve the $20 mark they will send you a check.

10. Reebee (iOS, ANdroid, desktop)

Reebee is a flyer app and they have the flyers for about 250 retailers.  You make a list of favourite flyers and search their database to find the best price on items you are looking for, as well you can create shopping lists and use them to price match. Its a simple easy app to navigate and utilize. If you are looking for a little bit more of an interaction with Reebee you can hop on over to their website and read their blog where they share all kinds of money saving tips, recipes, giveaways and more.

11. Coupgon (iOS, Android, desktop)

Coupgon is a coupon clipping app, however, you do not have to print your coupons. Coupons on this app are added every Thursday and run 1-2 weeks. Here is how it works: Find the store that you want to shop at on their list of participating stores. Tap “Redeem now” once you have found the ones you are interested in. When you are at the checkout counter tap “Checkout” on the app. Your phone will now go into camera mode. You will then scan the QR code at your checkout (this can usually be found attached to the point of sale machine). Show your coupons to the cashier and they will enter your discount. I will admit the first time I used it I had a learning curve to deal with, but once I knew what I was doing it was smooth sailing from there and I have saved quite a bit from this app. Now the only down side of this app you can only use it at a few Canadian retailers. Hopefully soon they have more on board.

Every Friday you will see your new offers appear on your mobile app, choose the ones you want and at the time of cashing out simply have the cashier scan your card or show them you card on your mobile device and your points will be added to your account. Points add up to cash that you can spend in-store on further shopping trips. I use this app frequently and love getting free groceries!

13 Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum Points (iOS, Android, desktop)

Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum Points are a great way of earning money towards future purchases. The Optimum card is accepted at Shoppers Drug Mart®, Pharmaprix®, Shoppers on Campus®, MuraleTM, Shoppers Simply PharmacyTM, Pharmaprix Simply PharmacyTM and Shoppers Home Health Care® store locations and any other designated locations determined by Shoppers Drug Mart Inc. New offers are picked based on your shopping history and are available for you to load onto your card via the app every Saturday. Make sure to pay special attention to your offers dates, some are available all week, however, some are only offered for one day deals. As well they frequently offer deals where you can accumulate points more quickly when they have double or triple your points days and offers. At the time of checkout give the cashier you points card or show them your card on your mobile device and the points will be added to your account. I have also had an Optimum card and the points add up quick. I usually save my points til the end of the year and use them for stocking stuffers.
