You can feel it in the air! Winter is around the corner and with it comes so much prep work especially if you are a Canadian driver.  I remember prepping my first car for its first winter and mine as a newly minted driver. I would be taking the car from our rural home on Nutby mountain to the town of Truro not so many miles away, but with winter, you had to be ready for anything. Ever since then I have known the importance of preparing your car for winter road trips. For me, it all starts with ensuring my car is ready and having great insurance.

So how does one ensure their vehicle is ready for a Canadian winter?

  • Winter tires. For me, I remember driving on black ice. It is no fun and can lead to an accident if you don’t know what you are doing. Snow tires give you that bit of grip you need. November is the perfect time to get this changeover done.
  • Get a tune-up. As a driver, I always got my car tuned up and topped up at the beginning of winter. Oil change is done, windshield fluid and all the basics were in place.
  • Have an emergency kit packed in your car. What should it include for a Canadian winter?  Check out this list:
  • As well we travel with a cell phone in the car and even a charging cord that plugs into the charger just in case.
  • Ensure you have the proper insurance. You want to have a quality plan in place.

Insurance should not be the last stop, as you prepare for winter though. It should be your first. Why? As one who has been in an accident, they happen when you least expect.

For me, it was when I was driving my young daughter home from school. Thankfully, there were no injuries but there was damage. Since we had a great plan in place it brought peace of mind to a difficult situation. I was definitely happy to know that everything would be taken care of and it was.

I  have always known the importance of great insurance. It matters in every area of your life.  Time and time again experience has taught me that.

From auto insurance to home insurance, business insurance to life products, Desjardins Insurance has you covered.  Remember that auto accident I mentioned? I was a State Farm customer at the time. Recently State Farm Canada became Desjardins Insurance.  They took great care of me.

Keeping My Business Covered with State Farm

One of the least talked about things when it comes to running a small business are your insurance needs. There are several things that should be thought about and talked about with a professional.

State Farm Canada business insurnace

Being a small business owner means that I have to think ahead and make sure my family and business are covered. Luckily my local State Farm Canada agent has lots of options that can help me make sure I’ve got the right insurance mix for my unique business needs. The conversation is an important one to have. State Farm Canada provided the below article:

Business insurance is there to protect you, your family and your business from unforeseen events that could impact the rest of your life.

As a business owner, you face tough challenges every day. Make sure your business has the right insurance protection to keep your business running. Talk to a professional agent to determine your specific needs.

Business Property Insurance

Business Property Insurance, protects your assets; buildings, equipment, stock, contents, from all risks of direct physical loss or damage, such as fire, theft and vandalism. A good policy will also cover you for those things you didn’t know about, like building by-laws impacting the cost of construction or repair of damaged buildings.

Your Business Property Insurance will also provide several Business Interruption options that covers the loss of business income and rental income that occurs as a result of direct physical loss or damage to your property.

Business Liability Insurance

Stuff happens. No matter how tight a ship you run. Random events are bound to occur.

Injuries can occur both inside and outside your business. What’s more, customer and visitor injuries on your property may result in lawsuits. Slips and falls are the most common hazard, resulting from inadequate lighting, missing handrails, uneven surfaces or debris on surfaces.

Liability Insurance protects your business in the event of a claim or action from a third party who has sustained bodily injury, property damage or personal or advertising injury as a result of your negligence from your premises, operations, or products and operations.

Business Auto Insurance

Many folks who use their own vehicles in their line of work, whether for deliveries, transporting gear, or sales calls, assume their personal policies will cover them. Unfortunately, this leaves them vulnerable to risks that could seriously impact their future financial wellbeing. When talking to your agent about your coverage, ensure you disclose that your vehicle is being used for business purposes. This will ensure that you have the coverage you need to get the job done.

Business Life and Continuation Insurance

As business owner you owe it to your business partners and family to ensure that you have considered a business continuity plan, so your business will continue without any undue burden.

It is important to consider the impact a fatality (whether yours or a business partner’s) will have on your business. What happens to your business afterward? Will your family be on the hook for taxes? Capital gains? Probate fees and a bunch of other miscellanea? As a business owner, you may be able to use life insurance to help with an orderly and economical transition. This is one type of insurance many business owners often put off thinking about until later.

Surety Bonds

A surety bond is kind of like a money-back-guarantee for your customers. It’s a guarantee that your company, or you as an individual will deliver on a specific obligation. It gives your customers peace of mind that you will deliver on your commitments. In some cases, it may even be compulsory when working with certain levels of government or private companies.

There are other types of business insurance, some specific to your business. You should consider ensuring your business has the right and adequate coverage. A reputable, and established agent can customize a policy to properly suit your individual needs.

Full disclosure, this article was sponsored by State Farm® Canada. They have agents across Alberta, Ontario and New Brunswick. Like you, their agents are independent business owners who support their local community.

Every year here in Canada more people are becoming entrepreneurs. I love seeing the growth in entrepreneurship in Canada, but with that growth comes the need for a few things.  For those of who are moms there needs to be a work-life balance. There also needs to be an understanding of what is important and the risks involved.  In today’s work business environment, you want to consider everything especially when you are starting out.

Earlier this year, I attended the Mompreneurs Conference here in Toronto.  As a small business woman, I love this conference every year. We talk a lot about the need for a work-life balance while there. It is key if you have a family and have a business.  One of the key sponsors was TRUSHIELD who I was introduced to at the conference. They are a great insurance company for us small business owners.  On their blog, they have a great post on keeping a work-life balance. Check it out here.

One of the things I realized while I was at the conference was how uncovered I was as a small business woman. I was taking risks that I did not need to be taking. For small business owners, we not only have to be looking at how to grow our companies but the risks involved in running them. We need our commercial insurance. Did you know your home insurance does not cover your home-based business?

When you own a business and operate it from your home, you need to look at having home based business insurance.  Now Kanetix (one of my favourite insurance comparison sites) is a great place to get a quote if you are considering home-based business insurance.

There is an advantage when you get a quote as well right now. Kanetix is running a contest. When you get a home-based business insurance quote, you are entered to win $2500.00

Let me know if you are a home-based business owner and if you carry commercial insurance. If you don’t, you really should and don’t forget to enter the Kanetix contest.
