The Top 10 highest PAID athletes of all time

It’s important to note that the above rankings of the richest athletes of all time takes into consideration the NET WORTHS of each athlete. This is different from the salary and career earnings of each athlete.

What’s the difference between? Why the distinction between net worth and career earnings?

If you’ll notice, the total career earnings can be a lot higher than the net worths of athletes. And this is because career earnings are taxed heavily as salary. In other cases, you’ll notice that some athletes didn’t make nearly as much from their sports as they did from their other business ventures. Net worths take all wealth and assets into consideration such as investments, properties, and of course salary.

Here is a list of the highest earning athletes of all time (in salary & endorsements):

Will Athletes Still Receive Payments After Retiring?

There is a reason why athletes take up endorsement and sponsorship during and after their careers.

As you may know, professional athletes are required to pay taxes on the money they make from their playing careers. They also have to pay a percentage of their income to the government in order to support the athletic programs that they use during their careers.

Although this may seem like a lot of money, it is not enough for many athletes. It is estimated that 80% of professional athletes will not have enough money saved up by the time they retire (Hennessey, 2008).

In fact, if we look at the top 25 retired athletes in the world, only four of them have more than $100 million in their bank accounts (Yahoo! Sports, 2012). In addition to receiving millions of dollars in retirement benefits, some retired athletes will also receive millions of dollars in endorsements and other benefits.

The money that professional athletes receive from endorsements is something that most people don’t think about when they hear about retirement benefits.

This is because most people assume that an athlete will not be able to make much money from endorsements after retiring from their sport.

Unfortunately, this is often not true for many professional athletes. Even though many retired players do not make as much money as they did while playing professionally, many do still make a decent amount of money from endorsements.

For example, Barry Bonds played in the MLB for a long time, which allowed him to have many endorsements while he was still playing. Many of these companies made deals with Bonds that allowed him to continue making money even after he retired from the MLB.
