Holiday Prep 201-Tech that can Help Your Holidays

Holiday Prep 201Tis the season and last week for the #cdnmoney chat on Twitter we were talking Holiday prep. Whther it is Christmas, Hannukah, or some other major holiday with it always comes lots of prep, from the budgeting, to the list making, to the shopping, to the travel there is always lots to do.

So how do we get it all done today? I know for me my tech gadgets and gizmos and apps keep me sane? I work off both Android and iOS operating devices. We have an ipad mini, a Samsung tablet, and a Samsung phone and an iphone in the house so I think that leaves us open to having the gadgets we need to help make this the most organized cost efficient holiday season.

So how do I use my gadgets and gizmos to help me this season?

I load them with apps that serve a purpose.

For list making and receipt keeping I use Evernote. Evernote I find to be a wonderful organizational app.

To keep me on budget I use Mint to track my budgeting, and spending.

To price check and find the deals that save me time and money at the grocery store of course I use my Flipp app. I have shared it here on my blog several times.

To find my car, there is Find my Car. Who hasn’t forgotten where there car is in an overcrowded parking lot.

Making a Road trip to visit family at this time of the year, Gas Buddy is definitely a friend telling you where you can get the best prices.

Have kids? Then you will also want to have a great Santa Tracker on your device as well, after all we have to keep track of Santa, don’t we.

Best thing about all these apps, they are free.

Do you have favorite apps that are making your holiday season easier? Join my friend Christa and me for the #cdnmoney chat on Tuesday, December 09th to talk the tech that makes the holidays easier this season. We will be on Twitter with the hashtag #cdnmoney. This is our last chat of 2014.

What Apps Does Your Teen Need for High School?

apps for high school

It is that time of year, and us Canadian parents are busy getting our kids ready for another year of school. This year my daughter is in grade 10, and will be carrying a smartphone to school, so we wanted to find some Apps that will help her to have a successful year. So what apps are great for the high school student.

First teens need a way to stay organized and MyHomework does just that. It allows for class schedule, homework assignments and you can even write reminders. This is a free app or you can pay ($1.99 for a no ads version)

A proper Dictionary is also important and for $1.03 for the premium version you can’t go wrong with this app. It has a proper English Dictionary and Thesaurus with over 2,000,000 definitions, synonyms & antonyms. Every teen needs a great dictionary and one of the things this mom loves is the Word of the Day.

The average high school student will write many papers, essays and projects, what a better way to store them and access them then Drobox. With 2 G of free storage students should have enough space to keep assignments organized and accessible.

mathtoolsSince my teen is taking Math, having the Math Tools App simply makes sense. It has 8 essential math solvers for students: binomial theorem, factorials, logs, system of 4 equations, system of 3 equations, quartic/cubic/quadratic equations, quintic & sextic equations. Excellent for advanced algebra, trig, calculus, physics, and engineering.(cost $.99 in the Google Play store)

Chemical TouchFor my science loving daughter, there is The Chemical Touch she can explore the properties of the elements, the standard amino acids, and the nucleobases with it. A touch sensitive periodic table and chemical information companion, it provides a wealth of information right at the fingertips. You can recolour the periodic table by selecting properties other than Atomic Mass to visually investigate periodic trends. Having exhausted the built-in information, the internet button opens the Wikipedia page for the selected element, amino acid, or nucleobase.(cost $.99) (This one is Available for Apple products). This will get put on our Ipad mini.

wattpadMy daughter is a great story writer so I downloaded Wattpad  for her. She can not only share her writing but read many great stories for free in the wonderful community that will be perfect for her commute. It is a great way to take stories on the road.(free)

worldatlasAnother great app to have is World Atlas. This app brings together information from Wikipedia, Wikitravel, Google Maps, Weather Underground, the CIA World Factbook, and others. (free)( in the Google Play store)

ShakesphereAnd my final choice for must haves for students is Shakesphere as we all know every year in high school students around the globe study his works. Shakespeare is a free app with the complete works of Shakespeare (41 plays, 154 sonnets and 6 poems, including doubtful works) and a searchable concordance to find the exact word or phrase you’re looking for (with “relaxed” searching to find words close to your search term). A great way for a student to study on the go. (free) (Apple products)

Make sure you never go over your data plan again with this nifty app. This application searches for all the free Wifi hotspots near you. It claims to cover 465,000 free hotspots over 140 countries.

Like to save money on your shopping? Then Shopcatch is for you. It lets you know where the closest deals are to you. There are also mobile coupons and you can even get alerted to deals at your favorite store as they happen.

Another app that lets you save on your shopping is the Red Flag Deals app.It is for the iPhone and iPod Touch and it makes it easy to stay on top of the latest Canadian deals, coupons, and freebies from wherever you are.  Take it shopping with you.

Are you like me a coupon loving mom? Then Clip mobile is perfect for you and for us Canadians it is the coupon app to have. Clip Mobile allows Canucks to search, save and redeem special offers from their favourite stores and restaurants from their local area. The coupons are listed directly by businesses, rather than aggregated from newspaper inserts or direct mailers. Just show the cashier the coupon on your mobile device and you save.

Want to know what that saved money is worth in the future or have a money goal then Money Talk might just be for you.

These are 6 great apps to have and I hope they help you save in the year ahead. By the way each and every one of them is a FREE download.
