You can feel it in the air! Winter is around the corner and with it comes so much prep work especially if you are a Canadian driver.  I remember prepping my first car for its first winter and mine as a newly minted driver. I would be taking the car from our rural home on Nutby mountain to the town of Truro not so many miles away, but with winter, you had to be ready for anything. Ever since then I have known the importance of preparing your car for winter road trips. For me, it all starts with ensuring my car is ready and having great insurance.

So how does one ensure their vehicle is ready for a Canadian winter?

  • Winter tires. For me, I remember driving on black ice. It is no fun and can lead to an accident if you don’t know what you are doing. Snow tires give you that bit of grip you need. November is the perfect time to get this changeover done.
  • Get a tune-up. As a driver, I always got my car tuned up and topped up at the beginning of winter. Oil change is done, windshield fluid and all the basics were in place.
  • Have an emergency kit packed in your car. What should it include for a Canadian winter?  Check out this list:
  • As well we travel with a cell phone in the car and even a charging cord that plugs into the charger just in case.
  • Ensure you have the proper insurance. You want to have a quality plan in place.

Insurance should not be the last stop, as you prepare for winter though. It should be your first. Why? As one who has been in an accident, they happen when you least expect.

For me, it was when I was driving my young daughter home from school. Thankfully, there were no injuries but there was damage. Since we had a great plan in place it brought peace of mind to a difficult situation. I was definitely happy to know that everything would be taken care of and it was.

I  have always known the importance of great insurance. It matters in every area of your life.  Time and time again experience has taught me that.

From auto insurance to home insurance, business insurance to life products, Desjardins Insurance has you covered.  Remember that auto accident I mentioned? I was a State Farm customer at the time. Recently State Farm Canada became Desjardins Insurance.  They took great care of me.

5 Add-On Car Insurance Coverages That Are Totally Worth It

car insurance

If you’ve ever made an auto insurance claim, then you already know what can be a pain and what services or coverages you may never use in your entire life. If you are shopping for quotes or just reviewing your policy with your current insurance company, make sure you look to see if you have any of the following coverages. While they might not seem like much more than bells and whistles, if you have any of the following, you could save yourself some serious cash in the long run.

Glass Replacement

Glass replacement can seem like a small perk until you have to replace your first windshield. A crack in your windshield can start to spread and eventually go across your windshield before you know it. According to the Los Angeles Times, there are 253 million cars and trucks on U.S. roadways, with an average age of 11.4 years; it’s only a matter of time before debris from one of them flies off and hits your windshield.

Rental Reimbursement

Accidents happen, and that’s why rental reimbursement coverage is one of the best things you can have. Rental reimbursement coverage is the same concept as having auto insurance in the first place: to protect you after an unfortunate event. If you were involved in an auto accident and suddenly didn’t have a car for a few weeks or month, how would you carry out your day-to-day functions. If you’re still skeptical, work out the numbers with free car insurance quotes and how much it’d cost to rent a car on your own.

Roadside Assistance

When you consider people who get stuck on the road, then you are thinking about all of those individuals who are stranded and just don’t know what to do. Who do you call, where do you go, and what is the best option? This is all assuming you even have time to think and aren’t on your way to work or that you won’t be late for an important event. As The Telegraph states, roughly one in three cars will break down over the course of a year. Obviously this can vary and it is only an estimate, but wouldn’t you like to be covered and have a plan in case your car is one of those three?

Accident Forgiveness/Waived Deductible

Accident forgiveness is one of those coverages that no one claims they need until they actually get into an accident. Not only can your rates increase if you wind up getting into a collision, but if you have to pay a major deductible of $500, $1,000, or even more than that, then having this coverage on hand can be a life saver. It’s important to protect your wallet, and instead of paying your bill, you could be in a great position with a coverage that gives you at least one do-over.

Towing

While this can sometimes be bundled in as a service with roadside assistance coverage, there are many reasons why you might want to have this one or at least be sure it is included in with a roadside assistance rider or endorsement. Towing means that even if your car won’t start or can’t move, someone will hook you up and take you to a repair station. If you are in an area that gets significant snowfall, or if you happen to be in an area where you travel several miles between locations, then towing coverage can most definitely be something that you need to have and will pay for itself in convenience the first time you ever need to use it.

Your car insurance needs to be all about you. After all, the whole point of insurance is that you pay money to protect against potential problems. Whatever you think is more likely to occur is something that you should be insuring against. That’s why you need to consider what the worst-case scenarios could be as well as the most likely scenarios, and then verify what you’re going to be able to do when it comes to making sure you won’t be stuck when you need help the most.

Looking to Save on Insurance: Try Insurance Hunter

Have you always gone with the same old insurance company? Are you looking to save some money when you are looking for insurance? Sometimes instead of shopping from agency to agency you can get the best buy by using an independent insurance broker like Insurance Hunter. You can find quotes for home, travel and auto insurance.

Currently you can get 3 quotes for answering about 3 minutes worth of questions. After you are done answering some basic questions your quote pops up, or one of their agents is right there ready to help give you your options. You can even buy the insurance right there too, or bundle it with another type of insurance.

I got a quote for my tenant insurance. There were some simple questions. Other than basic information on me, they needed information such as how old my house is, how far away it is from a fire hydrant and a fire station, the replacement cost of the contents for tenant insurance. When I finished I was referred to one of their agents.

If you can’t get your quote online, there is always an insurance broker there to help you. An insurance company would be trying to sell themselves, while, your broker will help you to find the best price.

Once you fill out the questionnaire finished either you get your quote or get told to call into a broker for further help.

Interested in getting a quote for house insurance or another type? Visit Insurance Hunter, take the questionnaire and get started today.
